These options will be available as soon as the Schedule for 12th edition of BBL (Big Bash League) in 2022/2023 is announced by Cricket Australia. CricketSchedule.com provides different options including Calendar export (iCal, Google Calendar, PDF Download or Excel file options).
Big Bash League (BBL) Australia – Coverage
The big bash league is an Australian-based cricket franchise T20 league that is held every year in the window of December-February months. BBL schedule is one of the top branded T20 leagues along with IPL to have a large amount of crowd and viewership on television.
In 2011, the defunct tournament KFC Twenty20 Big Bash (which consisted of six state teams) was replaced with KFC Big Bash League (eight franchise teams) by Cricket Australia. KFC is the official title sponsor of the BBL tournament. To date, Cricket Australia (CA) has conducted 10 successful editions of BBL schedule.
The main reason for changing the state league to a franchise league was to extend cricket in regional areas which are not supported by International cricket. CA was also planning to include New Zealand’s domestic teams to make BBL a trans-Tasman competition. However, New Zealand had its own franchise league called the Super Smash League.
One demerit point of this league is that a lot of Australian international players miss this league due to national duty. The BBL schedule calendar is in the middle of the Australian summer where the Australian side plays international cricket. Not many leagues around the world play a bilateral series during the time of an ongoing franchise league.
Only two foreign players are allowed in the playing 11 as Cricket Australia wants more local talent in the teams than a star-studded side.
Fox Cricket and Channel 7 are the local channel broadcasters for the BBL schedule.
BBL schedule has also extended its subgroups by including the Women’s Big Bash League.
BBL Schedule: Teams Participating in this League
There are a total of 8 teams in this league. Some of the teams have the same city names like Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunders but these two teams have their home grounds in different areas of the city as per latest BBL schedule.
1. Adelaide Strikers –
The Adelaide Strikers is one of the most popular teams led by Travis Head. They are the successors of the Southern Redbacks which was a part of the defunct KFC Twenty20 Big Bash. Adelaide Oval is the primary home venue of Adelaide Strikers according to BBL schedule announcement.
Every year on 31st December, the Adelaide Strikers play a home match called the New Year’s Eve match (NYE). The specialty of this NYE match is that we see more than 40,000 crowds (almost full) on the stand. The players wear limited edition new era caps during the match. There are a lot of fireworks and celebrations in the stadium during the NYE.
2. Sydney Sixers –
Sydney Sixers are one part the successor of New South Wales Blues which was a part of defunct KFC Twenty20 Big Bash. New South Wales was divided into two franchises Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunders. Sydney Sixers play their home matches in the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG)
Steve Smith has been a core member of the Sydney Sixers from the start of this league. Currently, Moises Henriques is the captain of the side. Sydney Sixers after winning their third title in 2020-21 edition are the current defending champions of BBL schedule.
3. Sydney Thunders –
Sydney Thunders along with Sydney Sixers are the successors of New South Wales. Shane Bond is the coach of this team, while they are still in search of the captain for the upcoming season (last captained by Callum Ferguson). Sydney Thunders play their home games in the outskirts of the main city in the Sydney Showground Stadium.
Sydney Smash
In the BBL, there is another league within the league called the Sydney Smash. It is a Sydney Derby played between two rivals of BBL – the Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunders. For the first three years, the Sixers had won all the 6 matches played during the period. Later the Thunders started winning their matches. Overall, out of the 20 matches played so far Sixers have won 12 while Thunders have won 7 matches.

5. Melbourne Stars –
Melbourne Stars is one of the strongest teams in BBL schedule history. They have qualified for the playoffs most of the time but never managed to win a single title. Despite having star players and performing brilliantly in the league stages, Melbourne Stars have always choked at big stages (semi-finals and finals). Melbourne Stars home ground is at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)
Melbourne Derby
Just like Sydney Derby, Melbourne has also its own Derby which is played between Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades. This Derby is very famous as the people wait for this rivalry with huge anticipation and excitement. In BBL-5, MCG recorded a large number of spectators (80,883 to be precise) which is the most in any of the domestic matches played so far.
6. Perth Scorchers
Perth Scorchers are one of the most successful teams in the history of IPL alongside Sydney Sixers. They have also played the most number of seasons (3) in the Champions League (currently defunct) beside BBL schedule.
Ashton Turner is the current captain of the side. Scorchers are so consistent every year as they have qualified for the semi-finals 8 out of 10 times they played, which is the most by any side of BBL. Scorchers play their home matches in Optus Stadium, Western Australia.
7. Brisbane Heat
Brisbane Heat is a franchise of Queensland which is a part of BBL schedule. Chris Lynn who is also the captain has been the top performer of the team.
Brisbane Heat plays all their home matches at the Gabba, Brisbane.
8. Hobart Hurricanes
Hobart Hurricanes are a franchise-team based in Tasmania state. Hobart Hurricanes have had a mixed performance in the 10 years of BBL, sometimes qualified for the knockouts and sometimes performed below par in the season.
Matthew Wade is the current captain of the teams. This is one of the teams which has not won a BBL title yet despite reaching the final twice. The Hurricanes’ home ground is the Bellerive Oval University of Tasmania Stadium.
Team Records:
Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers are the most successful teams of BBL schedule with three wins each. Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Stars are the only two teams that have never won a BBL title.
Perth Scorchers being the most successful team has won the most number of matches (64 in total) in BBL history
Sydney Thunder have lost the most number of matches (61) in the 10 seasons of BBL schedule.

New Changes in BBL
In order to glorify the tournament and add more interest in the audience Cricket Australia has made few changes in the cricket’s gameplay for BBL schedule.
1. Power Surge – Usually in T20 games the first 6 overs are powerplay overs, where only 2 fielders are allowed inside the 30-yard circle. A
According to this new change, each team will get the first 4 overs of powerplay and in the remaining 2 overs of powerplay, the batting team can decide to enforce anytime from 11th overs onwards.
2. Bash Boost – Each match will have 4 available standing points.
- For a win – 3 points
- For a loss – 0 points
- Bonus – 1 point
The bonus is achieved if a team batting second scores more runs in the half-way stage (after 10 overs) than the team batting first. If the team batting second fails to do so, the bonus point will go to the fielding team according to BBL schedule.
3. X-Factor – Halfway through the innings the captain can opt for a 12th man in the playing-11. He can come inplace of a player who was initially part of the line-up, provided if he has bowled not more than one over or batted in the innings.
“The Power Surge, X-Factor and Bash Boost prioritise high scoring, exciting cricket, introduce new strategic angles and ensure there’s always something to play for throughout the entire match,” – says Head of BBL, Alistair Dobson
These new rules have many flaws and glitches that need to be addressed.
Despite having a lot of advanced technologies, facilities and investing a lot on advertisement and sponsorship, the quality of cricket’s gameplay in Big Bash matches is not upto the mark in comparison to other leagues around the world.
Former Australian Shane Watson says that – “The one thing that IPL and PSL do is make the quality of the cricket, the product, the number one priority, This is where the BBL has really lost its way. The quality of the cricket has been put on the back burner in the Big Bash and the entertainment gimmicks have been brought to the forefront”
