Bangladesh Premier League [BPL] – Coverage

Bangladesh Premier League is a professional franchise league started by Bangladesh Cricket Board [BCB] in the year 2012. Looking at the success of various leagues around the world like IPL, BBL, CPL, etc, the BCB had decided to replace the defunct National Cricket League Twenty20 to a more professional T20 league called the Bangladesh Premier League.

Till now, the BPL tournament has completed 7 successful editions. The Last edition (2019-20) was won by Rajshahi Royals as they defeated the Khulna Tigers in the final. This year’s BPL tournament has been postponed to January 2022 due to the non-availability of frontline players. The BPL-8 is unable to get a window until the next year as a lot of players have international commitments.

A lot of international stars around the world excluding Indians have participated in this league. Just like leagues around the world, BPL is also a tournament where talent meets opportunity. When these young local Bangladeshi players share the dressing with international stars like Shane Watson, Shahid Afridi, Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, etc, they learn a lot from these players. This league has helped in the development of Bangladesh cricket to a big extent.

The last edition of the (2019-20) BPL tournament was a different and special one. The BCB had failed to fulfill the demands of the franchises and some franchises didn’t want two editions of the BPL in one year [one in January and the Other in December]. Therefore the Bangladesh Cricket Board had eliminated all the franchisees involved in the tournament. The BCB took the responsibility to run the tournament all by itself and named the season as Bangabandhu BPL T20 2019.

The BPL season usually starts at the end of the year from December and goes on till the next year’s January. The BPL window overlaps with the Big Bash League, hence we don’t see many Australian players in this league.

Andre Russell prefers BPL over BBL for its short duration- “The tournament [BPL] is more fun and it is shorter and so less time away from home. I get a lot of love here. The hospitality and everything is amazing. You get a warm welcome on this side of the world. I never really think twice. Once I heard this was happening, new rules, new teams, new owners and new franchise. I was interested to be part of it. I wanted to get the ball rolling,”

BPL Schedule Teams Participating in this League:

A total of 7 teams have participated in the BPL. Seven of them are current teams and one is the defunct team.

1. Dhaka Platoon:

Dhaka Platoons formerly called Dhaka Dynamites are successors of defunct National Cricket Twenty20. They are champions of the inaugural season and have continued winning their second title the very next year.  They have qualified for the play-offs (top-4) in every season of BPL making them the most successful team of the BPL.

Mashrafe Mortaza is currently leading the side. He has already won three titles for his side. The Dhaka platoon plays most of the home matches at Sher-e Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka.

2. Rajshahi Royals:

Rajshahi Royals have won the first title in the last season (2019-20) and are the defending champions of BPL. Rajshahi Royals earlier were called Duronto Rajshahi for the first two seasons. However, suspension of all franchises in the third season led to the formation of a new franchise called Rajshahi Royals along with the change of owners, team management, players, etc.

Andre Russell, who had led the side to a title victory in the last season has been retained as captain for the upcoming season as well.

3. Cumilla Warriors –

Cumilla Warriors franchise is a new addition to the BPL tournament. In 2015 with the growth in popularity of BPL, the BCB decided to expand the number of teams thus adding a new team in the tournament.

Mohammad Nabi is currently the skipper of this side, while star players like Shai Hope, Shane Watson and Junaid Khan are top performers for this team. The Rangers have a strong fast bowling department with the likes of Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed and Junaid Khan.

BPL Schedule Format

The matches are played in a round-robin system where each team faces the other twice in league stages.

Points System:

For a Win–  2 points

For a loss – 1 point

For No-result – 1 point will be shared

The matches will be played based on the schedule as each team plays 12 matches. The team with more points will be ranked accordingly in the points table. The top-4 teams will qualify and advance for the playoffs.

Note: If two teams tie-up with the same number of points, the team with the better net run rate will be ranked above the other.

Play-offs

After playing 46 league stage matches, the top-4 teams qualify for the play-offs. The Playoffs consist of four matches.

  1. Qualifier 1 – Top-2 teams will play Qualifier 1 and the winner will go straight to the final. The loser will get another chance to reach the final.
  • Eliminator – The 3rd and 4th placed teams will play the Eliminator. The winner will play the qualifier 2. The loser is knocked out of the tournament.
  • Qualifier 2 – The winner of Eliminator and loser of qualifier 1 will knock horns with each other. The winner will go through the final.
  • Final – The winner of qualifier 1 and qualifier 2 will play the final. The winner eventually wins the title.
