Bangladesh Premier League [BPL] – Coverage
Bangladesh Premier League is a professional franchise league started by Bangladesh Cricket Board [BCB] in the year 2012. Looking at the success of various leagues around the world like IPL, BBL, CPL, etc, the BCB had decided to replace the defunct National Cricket League Twenty20 to a more professional T20 league called the Bangladesh Premier League.
Till now, the BPL tournament has completed 7 successful editions. The Last edition (2019-20) was won by Rajshahi Royals as they defeated the Khulna Tigers in the final. This year’s BPL tournament has been postponed to January 2022 due to the non-availability of frontline players. The BPL-8 is unable to get a window until the next year as a lot of players have international commitments.
A lot of international stars around the world excluding Indians have participated in this league. Just like leagues around the world, BPL is also a tournament where talent meets opportunity. When these young local Bangladeshi players share the dressing with international stars like Shane Watson, Shahid Afridi, Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, etc, they learn a lot from these players. This league has helped in the development of Bangladesh cricket to a big extent.
The last edition of the (2019-20) BPL tournament was a different and special one. The BCB had failed to fulfill the demands of the franchises and some franchises didn’t want two editions of the BPL in one year [one in January and the Other in December]. Therefore the Bangladesh Cricket Board had eliminated all the franchisees involved in the tournament. The BCB took the responsibility to run the tournament all by itself and named the season as Bangabandhu BPL T20 2019.
The BPL season usually starts at the end of the year from December and goes on till the next year’s January. The BPL window overlaps with the Big Bash League, hence we don’t see many Australian players in this league.
Andre Russell prefers BPL over BBL for its short duration- “The tournament [BPL] is more fun and it is shorter and so less time away from home. I get a lot of love here. The hospitality and everything is amazing. You get a warm welcome on this side of the world. I never really think twice. Once I heard this was happening, new rules, new teams, new owners and new franchise. I was interested to be part of it. I wanted to get the ball rolling,”
