“Oh my gosh, where do I start? If I’m picking a batter, it’s Virat Kohli all day. If it’s a bowler, 100 percent Bumrah. My goodness, can you imagine that? Their presence would take this tournament to another level,” said Donald.
The South African icon added that including even a single Indian player in each SA20 team would significantly boost the league’s global appeal. “Imagine two Indian players per team—but even just one would be special. If I had to choose, it’d be those two: Kohli and Bumrah,” he said.
Kohli and Bumrah are currently touring Australia as part of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. While Kohli’s recent form has been underwhelming, with just 126 runs in three Tests at an average of 31.50, Bumrah has been in sensational form. The fast bowler leads the series wicket tally with 21 scalps at an incredible average of 10.90.

Allan Donald Lauds SA20’s game-changer Impact and Dinesh Karthik’s Role
The Legendary South African fast bowler and SA20 ambassador Allan Donald has lauded the transformative impact of the SA20 league on South African cricket, describing it as a game-changer for the sport in the country. In addition, Donald expressed admiration for Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik’s involvement in the league, hailing his experience and influence as invaluable to its growth and global appeal.
Reflecting on the success of the SA20 league during a media interaction, Donald emphasized the excitement and global attention it has brought to South African cricket. Sharing his experience from the league’s early matches, he noted the electric atmosphere at venues like Boland Park in Paarl.
“The crowd at Boland Park was incredible, and the global interest was staggering,” Donald said. “When I saw the viewership numbers a few days later, they were astronomical. That’s exactly what people want to see.”
Donald believes that SA20 has the potential to surpass leagues like Australia’s Big Bash due to its condensed format, which fits perfectly into cricket’s packed global schedule. “It means so much to cricket in South Africa, particularly at the domestic level,” he added, underscoring the league’s significance in revitalizing the local cricket scene.
Donald highlighted the current gap in domestic cricket, explaining how SA20 has provided a vital platform for South African players. While some players outside the league may feel envious, Donald believes the experience of observing and learning from SA20 will inspire them.
“Many players aspire to become the next Kwena Maphaka, Rassie van der Dussen, or Reeza Hendricks. The television ratings, ticket sales, and merchandise demand have been phenomenal, and the league has created massive excitement among young cricketers,” he noted.
Donald also singled out Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik for his involvement in SA20, describing him as a “breath of fresh air” for the league. Karthik, who has a storied international career and deep experience in the Indian Premier League (IPL), will represent the Paarl Royals in the third season, becoming the first-ever Indian player to participate in the competition.
“It’s awesome to have an Indian legend like Dinesh Karthik on board. He’s such an intelligent cricketer, and I really enjoy listening to him commentate. Young cricketers look up to Indian superstars and the IPL, and having someone like him in SA20 is a masterstroke,” Donald said.
Renowned for his finishing skills and wicketkeeping, Karthik has played over 180 international matches for India, scoring 3,463 runs, including one century and 17 fifties. His role in India’s victories in the 2007 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy further cements his legacy.
Donald also acknowledged Karthik’s efforts to promote SA20 in India, noting the significant impact it has on attracting global attention to the league. “It’s great to see him promoting the SA20 in India. His presence will mean a lot to young cricketers and inspire them,” he said.
