The 2023 Caribbean Premier League cricket competition has already begun, although weather conditions have presented a challenge across the first few matches of the season.
Of the first six games of this year’s tournament, fans and players alike have been left frustrated as there has been very limited cricket, despite the fact that each innings is already limited to just 20 overs. Only four have seen some action, with the first two games being the ones to have been finished to completion. Matches five and six were abandoned without a ball being bowled.
Naturally, it can be incredibly frustrating when the weather gets involved, as cricket is one sport that can not be played in inclement weather. Tropical storm Franklin was formed in the Caribbean region, and its impact is clearly devastatingly affecting the sporting event this summer.
What has happened in the 2023 CPL so far?
The Jamaica Tallawahs managed to get the defense of their 2022 title underway successfully in the opening game of the 2023 CPL season. They managed to register a score of 187 from their 20 overs. They managed to defend that total by keeping the St. Lucia Kings limited to a score of 176/8 from their 20 overs, thus winning by 11 runs.
The Kings would play in the second match of the competition and would get their own campaign off to an emphatic start. They wound up scoring 201/6 after Sean Williams hit 47 off 30 balls, and Faf du Plessis struck 46 from his 32 balls faced. The Barbados Royals were bowled out for 147 in their reply, with Matthew Forde returning impressive bowling figures of 3/12 from his three overs.
Other than that at this stage, there has not been much Caribbean Premier League cricket to report on because of the poor weather that has been experienced across the region.
Who are the favorites to win the 2023 CPL?
With just six best teams taking part in the competition, many believe that there could be an equal chance for each side to stake a claim to be the 2023 CPL champions. Each squad has quality and talent available to them, with squad depth being impressive this season.
According to the latest betting odds already available, the Trinbago Knight Riders are the current outright favorites. This is hardly a surprise to many, as they have dominated the competition since it was formed in 2013. They have won it four times which is the most by any franchise, but they last won it in 2020.
The St Lucia Kings are thought to be the second most likely to win, although the Tallawahs are also believed to have a good shout of retaining their title for a second successive season. If they were to win, they would go level with the Knight Riders in terms of most victories.
What is the format of the 2023 Caribbean Premier League?
A total of 34 matches have been scheduled to be played between August 17 and September 24, although we already know we will not see that many be played due to the weather. Games are not rescheduled. They simply go down as a ‘No Result.’ This translates to one point in the table; a win will equate to a total of two points while a defeat scores zero.
The table consists of the six teams which will play in a round-robin style competition, with games taking place over five phases across five different countries in the Caribbean. The top four teams will then qualify for the postseason.
The two teams to finish third and fourth will face off in the ‘Eliminator’ with the winner going on to face the loser of the tie between first and second. The winner of that game will then face the winner of the first qualifier in order to be crowned the 2023 Caribbean Premier League champion.
