Intense rivalry between cricket giants set to ignite in the 16th edition of the Asia Cup

The much-anticipated Asia Cup 2023 is right around the corner, and fans are gearing up for the fiery clash between cricket powerhouses India and Pakistan. As the tournament returns in the ODI format this year around, let’s delve into the head-to-head statistics and records between these two cricketing giants in the Asia Cup.
The 16th edition of the Asia Cup will be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, featuring an ODI format due to the upcoming World Cup. The tournament will commence on August 31 and conclude on September 17, comprising a total of 13 matches. Pakistan emerged as the defending champions from the previous edition in 2022.
Organized by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), the Asia Cup brings together teams from Asia. This year, the event welcomes Nepal for the first time, as they secured qualification by winning the 2023 ACC Men’s Premier Cup earlier this year.
The six participating teams will be divided into two groups. Group A includes India, Pakistan, and Nepal, while Group B consists of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. The top two teams from each group will progress to the Super Four round, and the final will be contested between the top two teams from the Super Four.
However, the journey to finalizing the Asia Cup venue was not without controversy. Initially scheduled for 2020, the tournament was postponed due to the pandemic. In October 2022, Jay Shah, the BCCI Secretary and ACC President, declared that India would not travel to Pakistan under any circumstances and proposed a neutral venue. Simultaneously, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) threatened to withdraw from the ODI World Cup, which is set to be held in India later this year.
Amidst the heated exchanges, former PCB chairman Najam Sethi proposed a hybrid concept, suggesting that India could play their Asia Cup 2023 matches at a neutral location. Initially met with resistance, the ACC eventually embraced the idea in June 2023 and subsequently announced the official dates for the Asia Cup.
In terms of the head-to-head statistics between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup, their clash is slated for August 31st. In their first encounter during the inaugural Asia Cup in 1984, India triumphed over Pakistan by 54 runs, securing the title. However, Pakistan had their moment of glory in 1995 when they defeated India by 97 runs. Let’s explore the head-to-head stats of this cricketing spectacle in the Asia Cup.
