Rising cricket stars that could lead England’s next generation

The England cricket team heading into the ICC World Cup in October is comfortably one of the greatest sides that the nation has ever assembled.

England’s key stars are aging

England go into the tournament as the reigning champions, having won in their home tournament at Lords back in 2019. They will be one of the genuine contenders again this time around in India. In cricket betting, England will be heavily backed to secure back-to-back successes this Autumn.

India are the outright favourites as home conditions will favour their spinners. England are well-equipped to compete for glory on Indian soil this year, however, the stars that will take them forward long-term are in question.

Stars such as Moeen Ali and Joe Root are surely imminently close to their retirements from limited-overs cricket. Their departures would leave an opportunity for some of England’s rising stars on the fringes of the squad, to finally earn their break in the limited-overs team.

Which upcoming players look most likely as of now, to establish themselves as a key part of the next England white ball generation?

Josh Tongue

Josh Tongue is a specialist bowler who is on the verge of breaking into the England squad. He could even be an outside pick as part of the squad that will head to India this year.

Tongue looks like he will certainly be involved in the setup for many years to come. He played in his first-ever test in June this year against Ireland at Lords. He was also called up to take part in the Ashes against Australia.

Veteran Ali had to withdraw from the England team that faced Australia due to injury, and Tongue provided a replacement for the man whom he may replace long-term in the 50-overs team. Over his two outings for England so far, Tongue has 10 wickets to his name.

England will have a huge void to fill when the legendary Ali likely retires from the team after the ICC World Cup campaign. Tongue could be the talented bowler who is best equipped to excel in his place. Their bowling styles differ but are both incredibly effective.

Sam Hain

Hong Kong-born Sam Hain is an impressive batsman who could work his way into England’s plans in the near future.

One of England’s stars when it comes to batting is Root, who could retire from the white ball aspect of the game in the coming years.

Hain is an example of an impressive batsman who could take Root’s place in England’s squad in the long term. He has recorded a batting average of 56.3 in 61 limited-over appearances throughout his career.

His England debut is surely only a matter of time. When the change of the guard arrives, and England’s long-term influential stars bow out of the white ball game, Hain will surely be one of the players on the fringes of the England squad that will benefit.

Some of the most legendary names in England cricket will likely not lead the team for much longer when it comes to the limited-overs lineup. However, the future looks bright, as the nation has an endless list of talent within its ranks.
