The IPL is into its 15th year now and it has grown from nothing to one of the most loved forms of cricket around the world. To celebrate just how good it is, we’re taking a look at some of the IPL all time batting stat leaders.
All time batting leaders
Number 5. Suresh Raina
Suresh Raina only retired from cricket late last year but did so having enjoyed a highly decorated time in the sport in all types of the game. His impression on the IPL will long be remembered. His IPL career was spent split between the Chennai Super Kings and the Gujarat Lions, who he captained.
During that time, Raina racked up an impressive 5,528 runs across 205 matches and, in doing so, goes down in history as the first person to break that 5,000 run mark. In addition to his batting prowess, he’s also taken more catches in the league than anyone else too.
Number 4. Rohit Sharma
Raina might have the history books on his side as being the first to hit 5,000 runs but he’s not the all time run leader – and not by a long stretch either. Rohit Sharma is next up in our list and he’s currently sat on 6,063 runs. Sharma is still active in the IPL too meaning that tally is only going to grow.
What is perhaps more impressive than the number of runs Sharma has is what those runs have meant. He started off with the Deccan Chargers but a move to current side Mumbai Indians came in 2011 and, from there, he’s become captain and guided them to five triumphs.
It’s completely plausible that Sharma moves up this list before he calls time on his glittering cricket career too and he’ll probably end up with the second most sixes in history too. Regardless of how that plays out though, it’s fair to say he will forever be remembered for his impact on the IPL.
Number 3. David Warner
Only narrowly ahead of Sharma in the total run stakes is Australian cricket star and World Cup winner David Warner. Warner, who plays for the Delhi Capitals, currently sits on a run total of 6,189 but notably boasts the highest average of every player that makes this list and has the second highest average of all players to have played in the IPL.
That average of 41.80 is remarkable and it’s propped up by more impressive stats. In addition to featuring amongst those with the highest runs and best average score, Warner also boasts the most half centuries in IPL history, ranks near the top of the most centuries and has hit 621 fours, which is second to the man next on our list. It’s not a bad career to sit down and tell the grandkids about, is it?
Number 2. Shikhar Dhawan
The obvious place to start with Shikhar Dhawan is his fours; we’ve already touched on the fact he’s hit more of those ground boundaries than any other player in the history of the IPL and given that he sits on 734 – some 113 ahead of second ranking Warner – that could be a record that takes some serious beating.
At the higher level, Dhawan boasts a grand total of 6,536 runs with those runs coming for a whole host of teams in the IPL. The Indian born left-hander currently captains Punjab Kings but has also represented five other teams including the Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
That’s not the end of the chatter around Dhawan though. He also boasts one other IPL record that will never be taken from him; in 2020 he hit back to back centuries becoming the first player ever to do so. He is elite.
Number 1. Virat Kohli
Last but not least we have the legendary Virat Kohli who plays his cricket for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Kohli holds a host of records in different forms of cricket but it’s his successes in the IPL that we’re interested in right now and whilst he continues to deliver at a high level, he’ll regularly be a name that attracts money on the sportsbook betting markets, which hardly surprising. Kohli has recorded a staggering 6,988 runs to date and, barring a complete disaster, will become the first ever person to break the 7,000 mark. What is perhaps more unbelievable though is that, at 34-years-old, Kohli is the youngest player in this top five.
When you consider that he holds the record for most runs in a season (973) the record number of runs he might set before calling it a day is a scary prospect and, in actual fact, could be pushing towards a level that looks to be unpassable.
There you have it, a look at the all time stat leaders in IPL history.
