The Most Exciting Cricket Series to Watch This Year

Cricket fans have much to look forward to in the modern era. The advent of the T20 format has led to a host of competitive tournaments, as franchise cricket begins to dominate the landscape.

The Indian Premier League, the Big Bash, the T20 Blast and the Pakistan Super League are now annual events. Followers have a diet of these games, but there remains a place for bilateral series between two countries. This is where international cricket began, and there’s lots to look forward to in 2025.

Take a Seat

While there’s nothing to beat attending a game in person, TV broadcasters are enjoying a boom period in terms of international and franchise cricket. The sport attracts millions of viewers, and there’s no need to leave the armchair if you want to take in some world class action.

Cricket fans can take in other leisure activities around the game. It’s a great time to be a cricket follower, whether you’re at home or you like to travel to games, and here’s what the rest of 2025 has in store.

World Test Championship Final

Much of the attention through the middle of the year is on England. We’re entering the height of the English summer, and the majority of professional cricket will be played here from June through to September.

From the 11th to the 15th of June, the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London will host the final of the World Test Championship. After a long qualification process that began in 2023, Australia and South Africa will battle it out at the Home of Cricket for the right to lift the trophy.

The structure of the World Test Championship has its flaws, but the final is always likely to produce the best teams and the greatest players in the longer form. Australia will rely on a formidable batting line up, led by the prolific Steve Smith, while South Africa’s squad features a pace attack that should prove effective in English conditions.

The World Test Championship Final is highly anticipated, but it’s only the appetizer ahead of a fascinating international summer.

Clash of the Titans

Following a one-off test against Zimbabwe in May, England will host India in a series that puts two of the world’s greats in direct competition. The teams will play five test matches, starting at Headingley in June and finishing at The Oval in August.

The retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli may have weakened the visitors, but India will arrive with an exciting squad. England’s positive approach to test matches, commonly known as ‘Bazball,’ will ensure a dynamic series that no cricket fan will want to miss.

West Indies Versus Australia

Australia remain strong in all forms of the game, while the West Indies have become known as limited overs specialists. From June 25th until July 28th, the two teams will meet in a multi-format series that takes in three test matches and five T20 internationals.

The tests, which begin in Barbados, could see the Australians dominate, but the T20s are likely to be far more competitive. The Windies are multiple world champions in the shortest form of the game, and the five T20Is will be highly watchable.

The Caribbean always offers a special atmosphere for cricket fans, and it’s well worth considering a trip here.

The Ashes: Cricket’s Greatest Series

The year comes to a close with the oldest recognised international cricket series of them all. Australia and England fought out the first official test match back in 1877, and the two countries continue to battle for the Ashes.

England will head Down Under to play five test matches, beginning in Perth on the 21st of November. The series will conclude with the final test, scheduled for Sydney at the start of the New Year. The two teams fought out a highly entertaining series in 2023, which ended in a 2-2 draw. If the same levels of excitement are reached in Australia at the end of the year, cricket fans from all over the world are in for a treat.

Best of the Rest

Most cricket supporters would consider these match-ups to be the highlights of 2025, but there are other series to enjoy. Both South Africa and New Zealand will undertake tricky tours to Zimbabwe before the end of the year. Elsewhere, Bangladesh will tour Pakistan while the Pakistanis will, in turn, travel to the West Indies.

As 2025 moves into 2026, the Ashes series will come to its conclusion, while paving the way for another fascinating year of international and franchise cricket. As always, there will be much to look forward to, but before that, there is plenty for cricket fans to enjoy across the remainder of this season.
