Basit Ali picks opening pair for Champions Trophy, suggest resting Babar for upcoming Test

  • by

Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has voiced his recommendations for Pakistan’s squad and player management as the team prepares for the ICC Champions Trophy. With debates surrounding the opening pair, all-rounder options, and player workloads, Basit has provided insights aimed at optimizing Pakistan’s chances in the marquee event.

The uncertainty around opener Saim Ayub’s availability has left Pakistan in a tight spot. Ayub, who injured his ankle during Pakistan’s Test tour of South Africa, is undergoing advanced treatment in London. If the 22-year-old regains fitness in time, Basit advocates for him to partner with Fakhar Zaman at the top of the order.

“If Saim comes back, then he and Fakhar are the best opening pair. If Saim is unavailable, then Shan Masood can open instead of out-of-form Abdullah Shafique,” Basit said on his YouTube channel.

Masood, who last played an ODI in May 2023, has had a lackluster record in the format, averaging 18.11 in nine appearances. Despite this, Basit believes Masood can be a dependable option alongside Fakhar if Ayub is ruled out.

Basit emphasized the necessity of including a spin-bowling all-rounder in Pakistan’s Champions Trophy squad. He strongly recommended Shadab Khan, who has been out of contention since the 2023 World Cup but continues to perform in domestic cricket.

“Shadab Khan is required at this time. Pakistan needs a spin all-rounder,” Basit remarked.

Shadab has an impressive track record in ODIs, with 85 wickets at an economy of 5.24 and 855 runs at an average of 25.90 in 70 matches. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him a valuable asset in high-pressure tournaments.

Pakistan faces a challenging group stage in the Champions Trophy, with matches against top sides like India and New Zealand. Basit acknowledged the tough competition, stating, “It won’t be an easy tournament for Pakistan.” He stressed the importance of strong starts in the first two matches, which could determine Pakistan’s fate in the competition.

Looking beyond the squad, Basit also suggested resting captain Babar Azam and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan for the second Test against the West Indies to ensure they are fresh for the Champions Trophy.

After a successful tour of South Africa, where Babar scored 148 runs in the ODIs and struck three consecutive fifties in Tests, his form dipped during the first Test against the West Indies on a turning pitch in Multan. Basit warned that another low score on similar conditions could dent Babar’s confidence.

“If the pitch for the second Test is like the first one, their confidence will drop. Babar is struggling to score runs. He found his rhythm after South Africa. He should rest,” Basit explained.

Pakistan leads the two-Test series 1-0, with the second Test scheduled to begin on January 25 in Multan.
