Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Shastri suggests Akash Deep for Adelaide Pink-Ball Test

Former cricketer Ravi Shastri has advocated for the inclusion of Akash Deep in India’s lineup for the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Adelaide, citing his suitability for the pink-ball conditions. The Test begins on Friday at Adelaide Stadium, a venue where India famously recorded their lowest Test total of 36/9 four years ago.

Harshit Rana, who impressed on his Test debut in Perth, is also a contender for the pace unit. In the first Test, Rana supported Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj effectively, delivering figures of 3/48 in the first innings. However, his performance dipped in the second innings as the Perth pitch became more placid, and he conceded runs, managing only one wicket—the crucial dismissal of Alex Carey.

The Adelaide Test, however, presents unique challenges as it will be played under lights with the pink ball, known for its extra lacquer and propensity to swing. Shastri believes this makes Akash Deep a strong candidate for selection. “The pink ball, with its extra lacquer, is harder and might seam and swing more. That’s where Akash Deep could be valuable,” Shastri said during the ICC Review.

While praising Rana’s debut, Shastri emphasized the importance of tailoring the bowling attack to suit the conditions. “When you reach the ground and see the pitch, you decide whether you want extra bounce and pace. But I’d definitely keep Akash Deep in the mix and consider him for the final XI,” he added.

India will look to regroup and adapt to the challenges of the day-night Test, aiming to gain momentum in the series after a mixed performance in the opening game. The final decision on the pace unit will hinge on the conditions in Adelaide, but Shastri’s recommendation has added intrigue to India’s selection strategy.
