Deepti Sharma Ready to Lead UP Warriorz in WPL 2025 as Team Gears Up for Season Opener

  • by

The UP Warriorz are set to begin their campaign in the third edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) under the leadership of Deepti Sharma. The team is preparing for its season opener against the Gujarat Giants on February 16, followed by a match against Delhi Capitals on February 19. Both games will be played at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara.

For Deepti, this season marks a new challenge as she takes on the captaincy role for the first time. Expressing her excitement, she shared in a statement released by the franchise, “I’m really excited about the opportunity. When I found out about the captaincy, it was a great feeling. I’m feeling positive that good things will happen for UP Warriorz this year.”

As India’s highest wicket-taker in women’s T20Is, Deepti brings experience and confidence to her leadership role. She acknowledged the difference between being a senior player and leading the team but welcomed the challenge. “I’ve captained my state team, which has already given me experience. It’s a little different from just being a senior player, and while it might be a bit challenging, I love taking on challenges, no matter the level. So, I’m excited about the season ahead,” she added.

A major highlight for UP Warriorz this season is playing home matches in Lucknow for the first time in WPL history. The Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium will host the team’s fixtures against Gujarat Giants (March 3), Mumbai Indians (March 6), and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (March 8).

Deepti expressed her enthusiasm about playing in front of home fans, stating, “Playing in Lucknow, at the Ekana Stadium, is a very exciting prospect for the UP Warriorz. We are delighted to finally get the opportunity to perform in front of our home fans. The cricket lovers in Uttar Pradesh have always supported us from their homes in the first two seasons, but this time, we are looking forward to experiencing their energy at the stadium. We can’t wait for our three upcoming games over there as a team.”

Deepti, who won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in WPL Season 2, will be aiming to lead the UP Warriorz to a successful campaign. With a blend of experience, strong leadership, and home-ground advantage, the team is eager to make a strong impact in WPL 2025.
