England Announce Playing XI for Champions Trophy 2025 Opener Against Australia

  • by

England has confirmed their playing XI for their highly anticipated ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opening match against Australia, set to take place on February 22 in Lahore. The match marks the beginning of England’s Group D campaign, which will also see them face Afghanistan on February 26 and South Africa on March 1.

Led by Jos Buttler, England’s lineup features three changes from the XI that played in their last ODI against India earlier this month. Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith has been given the gloves on his return to the ODI squad, while Jofra Archer will lead the pace attack alongside Brydon Carse and Mark Wood. England has opted to retain Adil Rashid as their frontline spinner, with Liam Livingstone and Joe Root providing additional part-time spin options.

Despite their reputation as one of the top white-ball teams, England has struggled to find consistent form in ODIs since their 2023 World Cup campaign. Under new head coach Brendon McCullum, they have been unable to replicate the aggressive ‘Bazball’ style that has defined their Test cricket approach. Their recent performances in the ODI format have been far from convincing.

Since the conclusion of the 2023 World Cup, England has participated in four ODI series, failing to win any of them. Their record stands at four wins from 14 matches, including series defeats against West Indies (1-2 away), Australia (2-3 at home), another 1-2 loss to West Indies, and a 3-0 whitewash against India.

England XI:

Jos Buttler (c), Phil Salt, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith (WK), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood.
