He’s going to set the world on fire: Ravi Shastri backs Rohit Sharma ahead of Brisbane Test

  • by

As India prepares for the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, set to begin on December 14 at the Brisbane Cricket Ground, former head coach Ravi Shastri has expressed confidence in skipper Rohit Sharma. Shastri’s support comes amidst Sharma’s underwhelming performance in the ongoing five-match series against Australia.

The series is currently level at 1-1 following India’s commanding 295-run victory in Perth, powered by stellar performances from Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, and Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, Australia regained momentum with a strong comeback, setting the stage for the third Test at “The Gabba.” The iconic venue carries significant historical weight, as it was here that an injury-ridden Indian team handed Australia their first Test defeat in over 32 years during the 2020-21 tour.

Ravi Shastri highlighted the importance of Rohit Sharma’s role and The Gabba as a venue suited to his aggressive style of play. “This is where Rohit has been at his best over the last eight or nine years. He has the potential to set the world on fire, and if there’s a place for him to throw the first punch, it’s here,” Shastri stated.

Calling the third Test a “moving match,” Shastri emphasized its potential to decide the series. “This Test is pivotal. Whichever team wins here is likely to win the series. It’s critical for India to get their balance right, as Australia now has their confidence back,” he added.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy has already witnessed high-intensity performances, and the Brisbane Test is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the outcome of the series. With the teams evenly poised, the focus remains on both captains and key players to deliver impactful performances at The Gabba.
