ICC Rankings: Shubman Gill Leads ODI Batting Rankings as Indian Stars Dominate Latest ICC Update

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has released its latest player rankings across all formats, with Indian cricketers making major strides, especially in ODIs and Test cricket. Shubman Gill continues to lead the ODI batting rankings, reaffirming his status as one of the top-performing batters in world cricket. Meanwhile, India’s presence is strong in both batting and bowling categories, though the all-rounder rankings show room for improvement.

Gill retains the top spot in the ICC ODI batters rankings, reflecting his consistent performances over the past year. He is followed by Pakistan’s Babar Azam in second place and Indian captain Rohit Sharma in third, making it two Indians in the top three. The rankings also saw Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka jump to sixth and Kusal Mendis move up 10 places to enter the top 10 at tenth, thanks to their notable performances in the recent ODI series against Bangladesh.

In the ODI bowlers list, India’s Ravindra Jadeja holds ninth position despite slipping one spot. The top position remains with Sri Lanka’s Maheesh Theekshana, while Wanindu Hasaranga rose 11 spots to eighth. Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi dropped to twelfth. India, while having a strong presence in batting and bowling, did not feature any player in the top 10 ODI all-rounders, with Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai topping that list.

India’s dominance was even more prominent in the Test rankings. Shubman Gill made headlines by climbing 15 places to achieve a career-best sixth position in the Test batters rankings, following an extraordinary performance against England in Edgbaston where he scored 269 and 161. This also marked his first victory as India’s Test captain. He is now just behind the likes of Harry Brook (1st), Joe Root (2nd), Kane Williamson (3rd), Yashasvi Jaiswal (4th), and Steve Smith (5th).

England’s Harry Brook reclaimed the top Test batter spot from Joe Root after a superb 158-run innings against India, while Jamie Smith entered the top 10 following scores of 184 not out and 88 in the same Test series.

In Test bowling, Jasprit Bumrah remained the top-ranked bowler globally, maintaining his position even after being rested for the Birmingham Test to manage workload. Mohammed Siraj made significant gains, moving up six spots to 22nd following his impressive spells against England. Meanwhile, West Indies bowlers Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph also advanced, each climbing six positions to 29th and 31st respectively.

Among Test all-rounders, Ravindra Jadeja continues to dominate, holding the number one spot with a comfortable lead. However, South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder made headlines by jumping 12 spots to third after scoring an unbeaten 367* against Zimbabwe, just short of Brian Lara’s all-time record. His decision to declare the innings at 626/5 despite nearing a historic milestone drew admiration and boosted his all-rounder ranking significantly.
