India has emerged victorious in the first One-Day International (ODI) against Australia, securing a remarkable five-wicket win at Mohali. The match showcased some outstanding cricket, with highlights including a century partnership between openers Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad, a pivotal half-century by Suryakumar Yadav, and a stunning five-wicket haul by Mohammed Shami.

In pursuit of Australia’s target of 277 runs, India’s openers, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shubman Gill, launched a brilliant start, displaying elegant strokeplay from the very first over. Their partnership of 142 runs set the tone for the chase.

Shubman Gill continued his splendid form in ODIs, notching up his ninth ODI fifty in just 37 balls, adorned with five fours and two sixes. India reached the 100-run mark in 15.2 overs.

Ruturaj Gaikwad also celebrated his maiden ODI fifty, taking 60 balls to reach the milestone with seven well-struck fours. Spinner Adam Zampa broke their partnership by dismissing Gaikwad for a commendable 71 runs off 77 balls, featuring 10 fours.

However, India faced a setback as Shreyas Iyer was swiftly run out by Cameron Green and Josh Inglis, contributing just three runs off eight balls. Shubman Gill’s fantastic innings came to a close when he was bowled out by Zampa for 74 off 63 balls, including five fours and two sixes. India found themselves at 151/3 in 25.3 overs.

Skipper KL Rahul and in-form Ishan Kishan took charge, but Kishan’s dismissal for 18 off 26 balls, caught behind by Inglis from a Pat Cummins delivery, left India at 185/4 in 32.3 overs.

Suryakumar Yadav, the explosive T20I batter aiming to regain form in ODIs, joined KL Rahul in the middle. Together, they steered India past the 200-run mark in 35.5 overs.

India reached the 250-run mark in 45 overs, with Suryakumar Yadav securing his third ODI fifty in 47 balls, consisting of five fours and a six. His innings concluded as Sean Abbott claimed his wicket for a commendable 49-ball 50, featuring five fours and a six. India stood at 265/5 in 46.4 overs.

KL Rahul (58* in 63 balls with four boundaries and a six) ensured a stylish finish as India triumphed by five wickets with eight balls to spare. Adam Zampa emerged as the most successful bowler for Australia, finishing with figures of 2/57, while Abbott and Cummins took a wicket each.

Earlier in the day, Mohammed Shami’s five-wicket haul played a pivotal role in restricting Australia to 276 runs in the opening game of the three-match ODI series. David Warner was the only Australian batter to reach fifty, while Josh Inglis provided the second-best performance with 45 runs.

With his exceptional figures of 5/51, Shami was the star bowler for India, receiving support from Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja, each contributing with one wicket.
