As India prepares for the highly anticipated pink-ball Test against Australia in Adelaide, batting sensations Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli are poised to chase records that could place them among cricketing legends. The second Test, set to begin on December 6, comes with India holding a psychological and physical edge after their commanding 295-run victory in the first Test at Perth’s Optus Stadium, thanks to Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance as both bowler and captain.

However, memories of the 2020 Adelaide pink-ball Test loom large, where India suffered a crushing defeat after being bowled out for their lowest-ever Test score of 36 runs. Australia’s Pat Cummins (4/21) and Josh Hazlewood (5/8) had dismantled India’s batting lineup, handing the hosts a straightforward target of 90 runs.

This time, the spotlight is on Jaiswal, the 22-year-old batting prodigy, who has been in phenomenal form. Jaiswal delivered a remarkable 161 in the first Test at Perth, continuing his stellar year in international cricket. So far, he has amassed 1,280 Test runs in 2023 at an average of 58.18, including three centuries and seven fifties. With a career-best score of 214*, Jaiswal now stands just 282 runs away from breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 1,562 runs in a calendar year, which the Master Blaster achieved in 2010 with seven centuries and five fifties.

While Jaiswal pursues Tendulkar’s record, Virat Kohli is on the brink of surpassing Don Bradman’s achievements. Kohli, who has scored 10 international centuries against Australia in their home conditions, is just one century shy of Bradman’s record of 11 international centuries against England in their home conditions. A century in Adelaide would not only elevate Kohli past the legendary Australian but also mark a triumphant comeback after a challenging year battling inconsistent form.

The task is formidable for Australia as they try to recover from the first-Test defeat and contain India’s in-form players. For Jaiswal, another stellar performance could solidify his reputation as cricket’s rising star, while Kohli has a chance to reaffirm his greatness with a record-breaking knock. Together, their performances could propel India to a 2-0 series lead, further asserting their dominance in the ongoing series.
