IND vs ENG: Fifties from Jaiswal and Sai Power India to 264/4 at Stumps on Day 1 of Manchester Test

India ended Day 1 of the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 on a strong note, posting 264/4 against England at Old Trafford, Manchester. Half-centuries from openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and debutant Sai Sudarshan anchored the innings, while an unbeaten partnership between Ravindra Jadeja (19*) and Shardul Thakur (19*) steadied the side at stumps.

Winning the toss, England captain Ben Stokes opted to field first, banking on early morning conditions. Indian openers Jaiswal and KL Rahul provided a steady start, surviving the testing spells of Chris Woakes, Jofra Archer, and Brydon Carse. Despite several plays and misses, Jaiswal capitalized on scoring opportunities, bringing up India’s fifty in the 18th over.

Jaiswal reached his half-century with aggressive strokes, including 10 boundaries and a six, becoming the first Indian opener since Sunil Gavaskar (1974) to score fifty-plus at Old Trafford. His knock of 58 was crucial in setting the platform, though he fell soon after crossing the milestone.

KL Rahul became only the fifth Indian batter to complete 1,000 Test runs in England, joining the elite company of Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, and Virat Kohli. Rahul’s disciplined stay complemented Jaiswal early on, but he was dismissed after a promising start.

Sai Sudarshan showcased remarkable composure in challenging conditions, crafting his maiden Test half-century off 151 balls. His knock was instrumental in India’s steady middle-order performance. He combined grit with occasional boundaries, particularly against England’s spinners, before falling to Ben Stokes for 61.

A major setback struck India when wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, batting on 37, was hit on the right foot by a Chris Woakes delivery. The blow caused visible swelling and bleeding, forcing Pant to retire hurt and be taken off the field via a motorized vehicle. Ravindra Jadeja replaced him and played cautiously through to stumps.

Ben Stokes was the pick of the bowlers with 2/47 in 14 overs, while Woakes (1/43) and Liam Dawson (1/45) claimed one wicket apiece. Despite early breakthroughs, England struggled to capitalize in the final session as India crossed 250 in the 79th over.

Brief Score at Stumps

India 264/4 in 83 overs (Sai Sudarshan 61, Yashasvi Jaiswal 58; Ben Stokes 2/47)
