  • by

India has regained the top position in the ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup 2025 standings, reclaiming their spot shortly after Sri Lanka’s emphatic victory briefly pushed them down the table. Both teams remain unbeaten in the tournament, but India’s superior net run rate has kept them ahead, according to the ICC.

India continued their dominant run in the tournament with a comprehensive 10-wicket victory over Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur. Winning the toss, the defending champions opted to bowl first to exploit overcast conditions, and their bowlers made quick inroads.

Seamer Joshitha VJ set the tone by trapping opener Nuni LBW for a duck. Malaysia’s top order collapsed further as Aayushi Shukla struck twice in the fifth over, leaving them reeling at 13/4. Vaishnavi Sharma then delivered a masterclass in left-arm spin, taking a stunning hat-trick in her final over and finishing with remarkable figures of 5/5. Malaysia was bowled out for a mere 31 runs.

In response, Indian openers G. Trisha and Kamalini G. comfortably chased down the target within three overs without losing a wicket, securing India’s second consecutive win of the tournament.

Sri Lanka showcased their intent in the tournament with another dominant display, defeating the West Indies by 81 runs in Kuala Lumpur. Batting first, Sri Lanka set a new tournament record with a massive total of 166/5, surpassing their previous highest score of 162 against Malaysia just days earlier.

Openers Sanjana Kavindi (38 off 36) and Sumudu Nisansala (19 off 22) built a solid foundation with a 54-run stand in under seven overs, highlighted by Sumudu’s towering six over midwicket. Contributions from captain Manudi Nanayakkara (37 off 31) and Dahami Sanethma (31 off 25) further bolstered the total.

West Indies’ bowlers struggled to contain the Sri Lankan batters, though Selena Ross stood out with figures of 2/25. Jahzara Claxton also provided a highlight with her dismissal of Hiruni Kumari.

In their chase, West Indies faltered under pressure, managing only 85 runs before being bowled out within 20 overs. Sri Lanka’s disciplined bowling and fielding ensured a clinical victory, marking their second consecutive triumph in the tournament.

Despite Sri Lanka’s impressive performances, India’s comprehensive victories and superior net run rate have kept them at the top of the points table. Both teams remain favorites to advance to the later stages, with their unbeaten records adding to the excitement of the tournament.
