India Women Target Historic T20I Series Win Against England as Five-Match Tour Begins

The Indian women’s cricket team is set to begin a high-stakes five-match T20I series against England on Saturday, June 28, with the goal of securing their first-ever bilateral T20I series win over the hosts. The opening match will be played at Trent Bridge, followed by fixtures at Bristol, The Oval, Old Trafford, and Edgbaston, as part of a closely watched tour that also serves as a lead-up to the T20 World Cup next year.

India, currently ranked third in the ICC Women’s T20I standings—just behind England—will take the field for their first T20I assignment of 2025, carrying both ambition and history. Despite having faced England 30 times in this format, India have won just eight encounters, with England claiming 22 victories. The last bilateral meeting in December 2023 saw England edge India 2-1 in Mumbai. Notably, India’s first-ever T20I win came against England back in 2006, though a series win still eludes them.

Harmanpreet Kaur will continue to lead the Indian side, which features a mix of experience and fresh talent. Star players Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, and Renuka Thakur will be central to India’s campaign. Dynamic opener Shafali Verma returns after an impressive Women’s Premier League season, where she scored 304 runs at a strike rate of 152.76.

Adding to the excitement are four debutants who have received maiden T20I call-ups: Kranti Gaud, Nallapureddy Charani, Shuchi Upadhyay, and all-rounder Sayali Satghare.

England, under the leadership of Nat Sciver-Brunt, enter the series with momentum following a 3-0 sweep of the West Indies. The hosts will also benefit from the return of world No. 1 T20I bowler Sophie Ecclestone, whose presence significantly strengthens their bowling lineup.

The series holds added significance as a key preparation phase for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, which England will host. All five matches of the ENG-W vs IND-W T20I series will be televised and streamed live in India, offering fans a front-row seat to what promises to be an intense and potentially historic clash.
