IPL 2025: England’s Jacob Bethell Thrilled to Join “King Kohli” at RCB

England’s rising cricket star Jacob Bethell has expressed his excitement about playing alongside Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli in the IPL 2025 season. Bethell, acquired by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for ₹2.6 crore in the recent IPL mega auction, is eager to learn from Kohli, whom he referred to as a “great of the game.”

“It’s a bit of a given, isn’t it? Virat! He’s a great of the game—King Kohli,” Bethell said with a smile, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

The 21-year-old all-rounder was a hot pick in the auction, with Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings bidding for him, but RCB’s determination secured his services. He will join fellow England teammates Phil Salt and Liam Livingstone at RCB, a franchise known for nurturing young talents and providing a platform to grow.

Bethell sees the IPL as an invaluable opportunity for international players to gain experience. “Any kind of overseas player that’s gone over there has come back with a wealth of experience,” he said, emphasizing his readiness to make the most of his time in the league.

Bethell’s IPL selection comes on the heels of an impressive performance for England in the opening Test against New Zealand. Although he managed just 10 runs in the first innings, he bounced back with an unbeaten 50 off 37 balls in the second innings, leading England to an 8-wicket victory.

Reflecting on his first-innings struggles, Bethell said, “I battled hard but unluckily didn’t make it through to lunch. Another day, you get through and go on to make a big one.” He credited teammate Harry Brook for making batting look “quite easy.”

Bethell also showcased his versatility in England’s lineup, stepping in at the number three position—a role he hopes to make his own. “I’ve always wanted to bat in the top four, so three is perfect,” he noted.

With England leading the three-Test series 1-0, the team is now focused on clinching the series in the second Test, starting December 6 in Wellington. Bethell’s confidence and adaptability will likely be key as England aims to maintain their momentum.
