Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, addressing the media after a challenging Day 3 of the Brisbane Test, described the team’s current struggles as part of a “transition phase.” Following another disappointing performance with the bat and ball, Bumrah defended his teammates and emphasized the need for patience and collective growth during this rebuilding phase.
India ended Day 3 reeling at 51/4 after conceding 445 runs to Australia in their first innings. Despite electing to field first, Indiaโs bowlers struggled early on Day 1, with the Australian middle order dominating. Steve Smith (101) and Travis Head (152) put on a mammoth 241-run partnership, tilting the momentum firmly in Australia’s favor. Though Bumrah led India’s fightback with an impressive 6/76, it was not enough to prevent Australia from piling up a massive total.

India’s batting woes continued as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant departed cheaply. Only KL Rahul (33*) held firm as the team ended a rain-affected day three in a precarious position.
In his post-match press conference, Bumrah admitted that the team was struggling to adapt to the challenging conditions, citing an influx of new players as a key factor.
โWe are a team in transition,” he said. “New players are coming into the side, and itโs not easy to play in these conditions. The atmosphere here is different, and the wicket offers unique challenges. But we donโt point fingers at each other. Weโre working together to improve.”
Bumrah also highlighted his responsibility as a senior player to guide the younger players, particularly the relatively inexperienced bowling unit.
โItโs my job to help the younger bowlers,” he stated. “Iโve played more cricket than them, so I try to share my experience. But everyone has to go through their own learning curve. Nobody is born with all the skills; itโs something you develop over time.โ
Indiaโs batting lineup, including Virat Kohli, faced criticism for poor shot selection, with Kohli once again falling prey to deliveries outside the off-stump. Bumrah, however, refrained from singling out individuals, stressing the need for collective accountability.
โItโs not about individuals; as a team, weโre all looking for solutions. These are tough conditions, but weโre confident that the players will adapt and get better as they gain more experience.โ
Bumrah lauded his bowling partner Mohammed Siraj, who picked up 11 wickets in the series despite battling a niggle during the Brisbane Test.
โSiraj has been fantastic,” said Bumrah. “Heโs shown great spirit and determination. Even with a niggle, he continued to bowl and support the team because he knew the pressure would increase if he didnโt. That kind of attitude is what we love about him.โ
Bumrah also emphasized the importance of staying focused despite inconsistent performances. โSome days you bowl well and get wickets; other days you donโt. I always tell Siraj to focus on what he can control, keep running in, and keep smiling. Heโs living his dream of playing Test cricket, and his family is proud of him. Thatโs what matters.โ

In response, Indiaโs top order faltered, with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Kohli dismissed for single-digit scores. KL Rahul remained unbeaten, trying to steady the innings.
