Jasprit Bumrah Equals Kapil Dev’s SENA Record with Stunning Five-Wicket Haul in Perth

Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah creates another record in cricketing history during the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth, tying with the legendary Kapil Dev for the most five-wicket hauls by an Indian bowler in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia). Bumrah’s exceptional performance saw him claim his seventh five-wicket haul in these challenging overseas conditions, reaffirming his status as one of India’s all-time greats.

Bumrah delivered a phenomenal spell, taking 5 wickets for 30 runs in 18 overs at an economy rate of 1.67. His scalps included key Australian players Nathan McSweeney, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Alex Carey, and skipper Pat Cummins. This feat places him alongside Kapil Dev, who also achieved seven five-wicket hauls in SENA countries. Bumrah now leads a distinguished list that includes BS Chandrashekhar and Zaheer Khan (6 each), as well as Bishan Singh Bedi and Anil Kumble (5 each).

In 27 Tests in SENA conditions, Bumrah has taken 118 wickets at an impressive average of 22.55, with his best figures being 6/33. His all-condition adaptability is evident, with five-wicket hauls across venues like Johannesburg, Melbourne, Nottingham, Cape Town, and now Perth.

Bumrah also became the fifth Indian captain to claim a five-wicket haul in Tests, joining an elite group that includes Vinoo Mankad, Bishan Singh Bedi, Kapil Dev, and Anil Kumble. The last Indian captain to achieve this feat was Kumble, who took 5/84 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2007.

India, opting to bat first, struggled against Australia’s disciplined bowling attack. The Indian top order faltered, with KL Rahul (26) providing the only resistance. A crucial 48-run partnership between Rishabh Pant (37) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (41) for the seventh wicket helped India reach 150. Josh Hazlewood led the Australian bowling with 4/29, while Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Alex Carey picked up two wickets each.

Australia, in reply, faced a fiery Indian bowling attack led by Bumrah. By the end of Day 1, the hosts were reeling at 67/7, with none of their top six batters scoring more than 20 runs. On Day 2, contributions from Alex Carey (21) and Mitchell Starc (26) pushed Australia to 104, giving them a slim first-innings lead of 46 runs. Alongside Bumrah’s heroics, Harshit Rana (3/48) and Mohammed Siraj (2/20) played pivotal roles.
