Jasprit Bumrah Ruled Out of Champions Trophy Due to Injury; Harshit Rana Named Replacement, Jaiswal Dropped for Chakaravarthy

India has been dealt a major blow ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, with star pacer Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of the tournament due to a lower back injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Tuesday night that young fast bowler Harshit Rana will replace Bumrah in the squad.

The BCCI issued an official statement announcing Bumrah’s withdrawal from the tournament, stating:

“Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Harshit Rana as Bumrah’s replacement.”

Bumrah has been out of competitive action since January, with his last appearance coming in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia in Sydney. After bowling 10.1 overs in the first innings, he experienced discomfort and was sent for scans. Australian medical experts later advised him to sit out the remainder of the Test match. Although he came out to bat in the second innings, he did not bowl again.

In another surprising squad change, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been dropped from India’s 15-member squad, with mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy taking his place.

The BCCI statement confirmed the decision:

“Team India have also named Varun Chakaravarthy in the squad. The spinner will replace Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was initially named in the provisional squad.”

Jaiswal’s omission follows his underwhelming ODI debut against England in the opening match of the three-match series. The left-hander struggled to make an impact, scoring just 15 runs off 22 balls. He was subsequently left out of the playing XI for the second ODI, with Virat Kohli taking his place. Meanwhile, Chakaravarthy made his ODI debut in the same match, picking up one wicket while conceding 54 runs in his 10-over spell.

India will kick off its Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 in Dubai. Despite the squad setbacks, the team will look to begin the tournament strongly as they aim to reclaim the coveted title.

The India Squad for Champions Trophy:

Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja.
