Sri Lanka completed a dominant innings-and-78-run victory over Bangladesh on the fourth morning of the second Test, wrapping up the series 1-0 and pocketing crucial ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 points in the process.
Resuming the day needing just four wickets for victory, it took the hosts only 28 minutes and 34 deliveries to polish off the Bangladesh lower order in Sylhet. The hero of the day was left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, who returned to form with a clinical 5/56—his 12th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. His spell ensured Sri Lanka’s ninth win by an innings margin against Bangladesh in Test history.

Jayasuriya wasted no time on the fourth day, striking with the third ball of his opening over by removing Litton Das, who edged one behind to Kusal Mendis for 14. He then trapped Nayeem Hasan stumped in his following over before finishing his five-for with a sharp return catch off Taijul Islam. Tharindu Ratnayake added the final blow by trapping Ebadot Hossain lbw, ending Bangladesh’s innings at just 133 in 44.2 overs.
This performance marked a strong comeback for Jayasuriya, who had struggled in the earlier parts of the series. Nine of Bangladesh’s ten second-innings wickets fell to spin, with Tharindu and skipper Dhananjaya de Silva chipping in with two wickets apiece.
Bangladesh, having won the toss and elected to bat first, failed to repeat their Galle efforts and were dismissed for 247 in the first innings. Sri Lanka capitalized with a mammoth total of 458, built around Pathum Nissanka’s commanding 158 off 254 balls, supported by Dinesh Chandimal’s 93 and a brisk 84 off 87 from Kusal Mendis.
Chasing to avoid an innings defeat, Bangladesh folded without resistance, as Jayasuriya led the rout with guile and control. Only Mushfiqur Rahim showed any resistance with a modest 26.
