Joburg Super Kings pacers dominate Sunrisers Eastern Cape for bonus point win in SA20 2025

  • by

The Joburg Super Kings delivered a commanding performance at the Wanderers on Sunday, securing a nine-wicket bonus point win over defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape. This emphatic victory was driven by stellar bowling performances from Lutho Sipamla and Hardus Viljoen, leaving the Sunrisers reeling in their SA20 2025 clash.

Fans flocked to the Wanderers, relishing the summer weather after weeks of Highveld rain. The vibrant atmosphere, filled with the sound of yellow whistles, spurred the Super Kings to an unforgettable performance. Lutho Sipamla, seeking redemption after an overstep cost him a wicket in the previous match, delivered a sensational spell. He struck early, dismissing England’s Zak Crawley with a sharp delivery caught at slip and followed up by removing Tom Abell, leaving the Sunrisers at 0/2 in the very first over.

The Sunrisers struggled to recover from Sipamla’s early blows. Aiden Markram and Jordan Hermann were dismissed in quick succession, plunging the team into deeper trouble at 17/4. Despite a valiant effort by David Bedingham (48) and Tristan Stubbs (37), who stitched together a 57-run partnership, the Sunrisers could not withstand the relentless pressure.

Hardus Viljoen delivered a masterful death-over spell, claiming 4/24 and ensuring the Sunrisers were bowled out for a modest 118. The Super Kings’ fielding was also top-notch, with Donovan Ferreira taking a spectacular one-handed catch on the boundary to dismiss Beyers Swanepoel, further demoralizing the opposition.

The run chase was a display of dominance and precision from the Super Kings. Devon Conway led the charge with an unbeaten 76 off 56 balls, while Wihan Lubbe provided steady support with 25 not out off 17 balls. The pair comfortably guided the Super Kings to victory with six overs to spare, marking a fitting celebration for captain Faf du Plessis’ milestone 400th T20 match.

Reflecting on the team’s performance, Du Plessis highlighted the significance of early wickets and the impact of the bowling unit. “Two in the first over makes a huge difference. It really breaks a team when you can take wickets in the powerplay,” he said. “Today was nice to get a few rewards, especially glad for the bowling attack.”
