Joburg Super Kings kept their SA20 playoff hopes alive with a dominant seven-wicket victory over table-toppers Paarl Royals at the Wanderers on Thursday. The win allowed Super Kings to remain in fourth place, tying with Sunrisers Eastern Cape on 19 points, though the defending champions held onto third place due to a higher number of bonus points.
Captain Faf du Plessis played a crucial role in the chase, leading from the front with a commanding 87 off 55 balls, smashing four fours and seven sixes. His innings ensured that the Super Kings comfortably overhauled the Royals’ 150/9 with ease. Reflecting on the importance of the match, Du Plessis emphasized the significance of the victory in keeping their qualification chances alive. “We needed that. It was a big game for us to stay in the competition. A really quality chase on a tricky wicket. Really pleased with the performance all around,” he said, as quoted by SA20’s official website.

The foundation of the chase was laid early, with Du Plessis and Devon Conway (20 off 25 balls) building a solid 54-run opening partnership. This strong start provided the platform for a smooth pursuit of the target. In contrast, Paarl Royals struggled early on, losing Sam Hain off the second ball of their innings. Hain had been included in the squad in place of Joe Root, who was rested for the match.
Du Plessis pointed out the importance of capitalizing in the Powerplay, something his side executed better than their opponents. “You have to be positive in the Powerplay and not have a start of 25-30 runs. It’s always a challenge to put pressure on the opposition in the first six overs,” he explained.
The Super Kings’ bowling attack was instrumental in restricting the Royals, with off-spinner Donovan Ferreira taking 3/23 and fast bowler Lutho Sipamla producing a stellar spell of 3/19, increasing his wicket tally in the tournament to 11. Their disciplined bowling ensured that the Royals’ batters struggled to gain momentum throughout the innings.
While several Royals batters got starts, including Lhuan-dre Pretorius (19 off 11 balls) and Rubin Hermann (28 off 26 balls), only Dinesh Karthik provided a substantial contribution. Karthik fought a lone battle, scoring his maiden SA20 half-century with a valiant 53 off 39 balls. However, his effort wasn’t enough to propel the Royals to a defendable total.
The Royals played without both Joe Root and their captain, David Miller, who was absent following the birth of his first child. This led to opportunities for fringe players, which stand-in skipper Bjorn Fortuin viewed as a positive takeaway from the game. “The biggest plus I can take out of today is a lot of game time for some players who haven’t played much. You can’t fault the batters for going out and playing their natural game. When conditions are as tough as they were today, someone’s bound to fall,” Fortuin commented.
Paarl Royals have already secured their place in Qualifier 1, where they will face MI Cape Town at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on February 4. The winner of that clash will advance directly to the final at the Wanderers on February 8. Meanwhile, the battle for the two remaining playoff spots continues, with Sunrisers Eastern Cape, Joburg Super Kings, and Pretoria Capitals still in contention.
Pretoria Capitals face a must-win match against MI Cape Town at Centurion on Friday, followed by a high-stakes encounter between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Paarl Royals in Gqeberha on Saturday. The third and fourth-placed teams will meet in the Eliminator at Centurion on February 5, and the winner will face the loser of Qualifier 1 in Qualifier 2 at the same venue the next day.
