
Former Australian cricketer Joe Burns has been named the new captain of Italy’s national cricket team, marking a significant milestone for Italian cricket. Burns, who switched his allegiance to Italy in May 2024 through his mother’s heritage, brings extensive international experience and a competitive spirit to his new role.
Since making his debut for Italy in June, Burns has impressed with his performances, scoring 211 runs in five T20Is at an average of 70.33 and a strike rate of 144.52. His most notable innings came in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Europe Qualifier Group A, where he smashed an unbeaten 108 off 55 balls, leading Italy to a crucial victory over Romania.

Burns had a successful international career with Australia before his transition to Italy. Between 2014 and 2020, he played 23 Test matches, scoring 1,442 runs at an average of 36.97, including four centuries. His experience as a Test opener is expected to bring stability and expertise to Italy’s lineup.
Beyond international cricket, Burns has made waves in franchise T20 leagues. He recently signed with the Dubai Capitals for the UAE’s International League T20 (ILT20) and has played in other major leagues such as the Vitality Blast and the Big Bash League.
Italy’s cricket profile is on the rise. The appointment of Burns as captain, along with players like Thomas Draca gaining attention in the IPL circuit, signals the country’s growing ambitions in the sport. Draca, a fast bowler, was shortlisted for the 2025 IPL auction, further showcasing Italy’s emerging talent.
