Joe Root surpasses Eoin Morgan to set massive ODI record for England

  • by

England’s star batter Joe Root has etched his name in history by surpassing former captain Eoin Morgan for the most fifty-plus scores in men’s ODIs for England. Root achieved this milestone during the second ODI against India in Cuttack, where he played a crucial role in stabilizing England’s innings.

Root’s composed knock of 69 runs off 72 balls, featuring six boundaries at a strike rate of 95.83, ensured England maintained momentum despite an early scare. His innings marked his 56th fifty-plus score in ODIs, surpassing Morgan’s record of 55. Ian Bell sits in third place with 39, followed by Jos Buttler with 38 fifty-plus scores in ODIs.

Root’s innings was not without moments of fortune. While on 16, he misjudged a sweep shot against Axar Patel, leading to an appeal from the Indian side. However, the on-field umpire ruled in Root’s favor, and India opted not to review the decision. Just an over later, the big screen replay showed three reds, indicating that had India taken the review, Root would have been out. Skipper Rohit Sharma expressed his frustration after missing the opportunity.

The English batter continued to make the most of his luck, putting together a valuable 66-run partnership with Harry Brook for the third wicket. He also forced India to burn a second review when, on 36, he attempted a reverse sweep, missing the line of the ball. The LBW decision was reviewed, but replays showed a faint glove touch, saving Root yet again.

Root reached his half-century in 52 balls, anchoring England’s innings before eventually falling on 69. His dismissal came when he attempted a lofted drive, only to find Virat Kohli at wide long-off. It marked the fifth time that Root has fallen to Ravindra Jadeja in ODIs.
