Joe Root produced a spectacular T20 innings to guide the Paarl Royals to a thrilling eight-wicket win over the Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 2025 on Saturday. Root’s unbeaten 92 off 60 balls showcased precision and creativity, steering the Royals to a successful chase of 212/5 with just two balls to spare.

Root’s innings, featuring 11 perfectly timed boundaries and two sixes, was a masterclass in placement and innovation. Proving that T20 cricket isn’t just about raw power, Root anchored the Royals’ chase with finesse, cementing his role as the backbone of the batting lineup.

The Royals faced an early blow when Rising Star Lhuan-dre Pretorius was dismissed on the first ball of the chase, silencing the fans dressed in pink at Centurion. However, Rubin Hermann, in his debut match for the Royals, stepped up to the challenge. Hermann smashed 56 off 33 balls, including five fours and three sixes, sharing a crucial 125-run partnership in just 69 balls with Root.

After Hermann’s dismissal, captain David Miller took charge, joining Root for an unbroken 88-run stand off just 48 balls. Miller’s composed presence ensured the Royals crossed the finish line, securing a vital four points and bolstering their position in the standings.

Despite their loss, the Pretoria Capitals put up a strong performance with the bat. Will Smeed (54 off 34 balls), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (42 off 29 balls), and Kyle Verreynne (45 off 23 balls) contributed to the team’s imposing total of 212/5. The Centurion pitch, resembling a batting paradise, allowed the Capitals to set a formidable target.

However, the Royals’ mystery spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman made a crucial impact, claiming 2/28 in his four overs. His economical spell disrupted the Capitals’ flow and provided the Royals with a critical edge.
