Kane Williamson commends Shubman Gill’s prowess before Gujarat Titans 1st IPL match against CSK on Friday

New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson, set to play for Gujarat Titans (GT) in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, praised India’s star batsman Shubman Gill on Wednesday, calling him a “strong competitor” with a “great understanding of the game.”

Gujarat Titans will begin their IPL 2023 campaign against four-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 31, marking the start of the tournament.

“Shubman Gill is a really strong competitor. I’m sure he’ll learn a lot from the various leaders he plays under. He’s a fantastic guy with a great understanding of the game,” Williamson said during a media interaction before the season.

Shubman has been in outstanding form across all formats this year. In 17 matches and 18 innings, he has scored 980 runs at an average of 61.25, with five centuries and a fifty, and a top score of 208.

In the last IPL season, Shubman was a standout performer for the title-winning GT in their debut season. He was the tournament’s fifth-highest run-scorer and GT’s second-highest, amassing 483 runs in 16 matches at an average of 34.50 and a strike rate of 132.32. His highest score was 96, and he notched four fifties in the tournament.

Williamson expressed excitement about being in India and the upcoming season, saying, “It’s great to be here. Nice to meet most of the players. A couple of players are yet to arrive. Great to meet the management, players, and get involved in training. Everyone’s excited for the start of the season.”

Discussing his love for India, Williamson mentioned, “Whenever I come here, I experience the culture, which is completely different from where I’m from, and I love it. Food as well. I love the food. We also cannot forget the passion they have for cricket.”

Last season, Gujarat topped the points table with 20 points from 10 wins and four losses. They secured a direct spot in the final after defeating Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 1 by seven wickets. In the final, Gujarat triumphed over Rajasthan once again, winning by seven wickets.

GT’s star performers in their debut season included skipper Pandya (487 runs in 15 matches with four fifties, eight wickets), Shubman Gill (483 runs in 16 matches with four fifties), David Miller (481 runs in 16 matches with two fifties), Mohammed Shami (20 wickets), and Rashid Khan (19 wickets).
