KL Rahul, Jaiswal, and Pant Achieve Historic Milestones in England During Fourth Test

The ongoing fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 at Old Trafford, Manchester, has been a historic affair for Indian cricket, with three of its premier batters — KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant — achieving significant milestones in England’s testing conditions. India, trailing 1-2 in the five-match series, is battling to stay alive against a strong England side.

KL Rahul Joins Elite 1000-Run Club in England

KL Rahul etched his name among Indian cricket greats by surpassing 1,000 Test runs in England, becoming only the fifth Indian batter to achieve the feat. He joins an illustrious list that includes Sachin Tendulkar (1,575), Rahul Dravid (1,376), Sunil Gavaskar (1,152), and Virat Kohli (1,096). Rahul, who now has 1,035 runs in 12 Tests in England, boasts four centuries and two fifties, with a highest score of 149.

Rahul’s performances have been crucial in India’s overseas success, with nine of his ten Test centuries coming away from home. Seven of these have been in South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia (SENA countries). Despite ups and downs in his career, Rahul’s adaptability has made him one of India’s most dependable batters outside Asia.

The right-hander is also one of India’s most versatile players across formats. He has amassed over 3,000 ODI runs at an average of 49.08 and has been a key figure in T20Is, where he is India’s fourth-highest run-scorer. However, he hasn’t featured in T20Is since the 2022 T20 World Cup due to evolving team dynamics favoring younger hard-hitters.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Completes 1,000 Test Runs Against England

Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his remarkable rise by completing 1,000 Test runs against England during the second session on Day 1. The 23-year-old opener achieved the milestone in just 16 innings, making him the joint second-quickest Indian to do so alongside Mohammad Azharuddin, only behind Tendulkar and Dravid, who managed it in 15 innings.

Jaiswal’s knock of 58 off 107 balls, decorated with 10 fours and a six, also made him the first Indian opener in 50 years to score a fifty-plus knock at Old Trafford, a record last achieved by Sunil Gavaskar in 1974. His consistency at the top has been vital for India’s batting lineup in the series, especially in conditions where opening partnerships have been hard to come by.

Rishabh Pant Crosses 1,000 Test Runs in England, Suffers Injury

Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant became the sixth Indian to surpass 1,000 Test runs in England during the same Test, reaching 1,018 runs before a painful injury halted his progress. Pant, batting fluently on 37, was struck on the right foot by a sharp delivery from Chris Woakes, which caused swelling and bleeding. Unable to continue, he was assisted off the field, adding to India’s injury concerns.

Pant’s current series has been extraordinary — 462 runs in seven innings at an average of 77.00, including two centuries and two fifties. His twin centuries in the first Test at Leeds made him the first Indian wicketkeeper-batter to achieve this feat in a single Test in England. He has also overtaken MS Dhoni’s record for most Test centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper and is now Asia’s most successful glovesman in SENA countries.

Pant’s prolific form has drawn comparisons to historic performances by wicketkeeper-batters, including South Africa’s DT Lindsay (606 runs vs Australia in 1966/67) and Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower (540 runs vs India in 2000/01). Should he continue this form once fit, Pant could enter an elite bracket of keepers with 500-plus runs in a bilateral series.

India’s top-order heroics have come at a crucial juncture. With England leading 2-1, India must win at Old Trafford to stay alive in the series. England’s playing XI, led by Ben Stokes, features key players like Joe Root, Jofra Archer, and Chris Woakes, while India is fielding a mix of youth and experience, including Shubman Gill (captain), Jaiswal, Rahul, and senior pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
