Lanka Premier League (LPL) Sri Lanka – Coverage

The Lanka Premier League is Sri Lanka’s official T20 league which was inaugurated in the year 2020. This League is the successor of the defunct Super 4’s T20 and Sri Lankan Premier League.

Sri Lanka, despite being a strong international team featuring in the top-10 of ICC rankings, didn’t have a proper league of their own till 2020.

Earlier before 2011, Sri Lanka had only a domestic league where local players represented their state teams only.

In 2012, the Sri Lanka Cricket board had decided to start a franchise-based league modeled on the very successful Indian Premier League. In 2012 the first edition of the Sri Lanka Premier League was conducted successfully in the country.

The next year in 2013, the tournament was canceled off as the franchisee owners had failed to fulfill their payments before the deadline. The very next year in 2014, the tournament was called off due to lack of sponsorship and organization issues. Since then Sri Lanka didn’t have an official league that had overseas players and watched worldwide.

In 2018, the SLC board decided to restart the franchise league naming it the Lanka Premier League. However, the league was postponed many times due to administration issues with the SLC board.

Finally, on 26th November 2020,  the league was given a green signal as 70 overseas players had participated in this league along with local Sri Lankan Players.

Indian-based fantasy company MyCircle 11 is the official title sponsor of this league.

Because of the fact that the tournament was conducted in the COVID-19 pandemic times, all the matches were held in MRIC Stadium at Hambantota. The SLC had adopted England’s Standard operating Protocols where all players were quarantined for 7 days to enter into a biosecure bubble. All the matches were played behind closed doors (no crowd was allowed).

Jaffna Stallions are the defending champions of LPL. They have won the inaugural season by defeating the Galle Gladiators by 59 runs.

The next/upcoming edition of LPL is scheduled from 27th July 2021 to 19th August 2021. A new team from the eastern part of the country – Trincomalee is expected to take part in this upcoming tournament, hence making it a six-team league.

The LPL director – Mr. Ravin Wickramaratne is also looking to get at least two international icon A-grade players like Chris Gayle, AB De Villiers, Faf du Plessis in every team to lift the tournament to greater heights.

LPL Schedule Format:

A total of 24 matches are played in this tournament including the semi-finals and final. The matches are played in a round-robin where every team meets each other twice. With the addition of an extra team in the upcoming season, the matches will be extended to 33.

Each team will get to play 10 matches in the league stage.

Point System:

For a Win – 2 points

For a Loss – 0 points

For a No result – 1 point shared by each team

Based on the points, the teams with better points will be ranked higher in the points table. At the end of all 30 league stage matches, the top-4 teams will qualify for the playoffs (semi-final and final)

Play-offs

  1. Semi-Final 1 – The teams that have finished 1st and 4th will play the semi-final 1. The winner will qualify for the final and the loser is eliminated from the tournament.
  • Semi-Final 2 – The Teams that have finished 2nd and 3rd will play the semi-final 2. The winner will qualify for the final and the loser is eliminated from the tournament.
  • Final – The winners of both the semi-finals will play the final. The winner will eventually lift the title.

Finally after a long wait, the  Lanka Premier League has become the brand of the country as well as the Sri Lanka Cricket Board. A lot of overseas players had appreciated their visit to Sri Lanka to play the LPL schedule.

Despite the fact that LPL is not one of the most popular leagues around the world, the standard of cricket’s gameplay has remained stable. In the 1st season of LPL we saw great batting performances, individual brilliance, outstanding catches, strategic gameplans etc.

The league’s main priority is to develop and groom the local young talent of Sri Lanka for the international level. Hopefully, in the forthcoming years the LPL develops into a big mega league like IPL, PSL,BBL.
