Melbourne stars sign Mitchell Swepson on 3-year BBL deal

  • by

Melbourne Stars have secured the services of Queensland legspinner Mitchell Swepson on a three-year contract as the Big Bash League’s first player movement window came to a close. Swepson, who previously played a pivotal role in Brisbane Heat’s 2023-24 BBL title-winning campaign, has now opted for a fresh challenge with the Stars.

The 31-year-old legspinner spent a decade with the Heat, where he gained valuable experience and even captained the side in the absence of Colin Munro during the last BBL season. However, his recent performance was not his best, managing just four wickets in nine matches while maintaining an economy rate of 8.93. Despite the dip in form, his experience and skillset made him a key target for Melbourne Stars.

Expressing his gratitude to his former team, Swepson acknowledged the role Brisbane Heat played in shaping his career. He thanked the franchise for the opportunities provided and the support given to him and his family over the years. Looking ahead, he is excited about his move to Melbourne, eager to work alongside Marcus Stoinis, coach Peter Moores, and the Stars’ squad at the MCG in the upcoming season.

Swepson has also represented Australia in T20Is, though he has not featured in international cricket since 2022. His addition to the Melbourne Stars is seen as a strategic move to strengthen their spin department. Blair Crouch, the General Manager of the Stars, emphasized the importance of acquiring a high-performing domestic spinner. He believes Swepson’s experience will not only enhance the team’s bowling attack but also provide valuable leadership and support to Marcus Stoinis. At 31, Crouch sees Swepson as being at the peak of his career and a crucial part of the squad’s plans for the next three years.

Meanwhile, Melbourne Renegades have also made key moves in the player market. The franchise has signed Hobart Hurricanes’ title-winning opener Caleb Jewell on a two-year deal. Additionally, the Renegades have secured the services of free agents Jason Behrendorff and Brendan Doggett, reinforcing their squad ahead of the upcoming BBL season.
