Shami, 34, had a challenging year recovering from an ankle surgery that sidelined him for nearly 12 months. Despite the setbacks, he made an impressive return to competitive cricket, featuring for Bengal in domestic tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Ranji Trophy. His first major appearance post-recovery was in a Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh in November, followed by a commendable performance in the ODI World Cup 2023 final.
