Mohammed Shami ruled out of upcoming BGT Tests

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued an update on Indian pacer Mohammed Shami’s recovery following his right heel surgery, highlighting his progress and the ongoing management of minor knee swelling.

According to the advisory, Shami has made a full recovery from his heel surgery. Demonstrating his fitness, the bowler delivered 43 overs for Bengal in a Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh in November and participated in all nine matches of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). During the SMAT, Shami undertook additional bowling sessions to prepare for Test cricket.

However, the BCCI noted that Shami has developed minor swelling in his left knee due to increased joint loading from his bowling workload. This condition, described as a normal response to heightened activity, requires careful management.

“His left knee has exhibited minor swelling due to increased joint loading from his bowling workload. This swelling is in line with expectations, given the increased bowling activity after a prolonged period,” the advisory stated.

The BCCI Medical Team has determined that Shami needs more time for controlled exposure to bowling loads. As a result, he has not been declared fit for the remaining two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

In the meantime, Shami will continue targeted strength and conditioning work under the supervision of medical staff at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence. His participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy will be subject to the progress of his knee.

“Shami will continue to undergo targeted strength and conditioning work under the guidance of the medical staff at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence and will build his bowling loads required to meet the demands of the longest format of the game. His participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy will depend on the progress of his knee,” said Devajit Saikia, Honorary Joint Secretary of the BCCI.
