New Zealand and England stick to unchanged XIs for Wellington Test

New Zealand has announced an unchanged playing XI for the second Test against England, set to begin in Wellington. This marks only the third instance in New Zealand’s last 47 Tests where they have fielded the same lineup in consecutive matches, according to the ICC.

England has also retained the same XI that secured an eight-wicket victory in the first Test at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, giving them a 1-0 lead in the series. The visitors will look to carry their momentum into the second Test.

Reflecting on the first Test, New Zealand skipper Tom Latham acknowledged his team’s shortcomings, particularly in fielding. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Latham said, “We weren’t at our best last game, but we try to keep things level. The guys have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure they’re ready for this game.”

In the Christchurch Test, England dominated Day 4, requiring only 104 runs to secure victory after a strong bowling performance by Brydon Carse. Carse claimed career-best figures of 6/42, dismantling New Zealand’s lower order as the Kiwis added just 99 runs to their overnight total of 155/6. Daryl Mitchell’s valiant 84 and contributions from the tail were not enough to set a competitive target.

England’s chase was led by debutant Jacob Bethell, who smashed an unbeaten fifty off just 37 balls, ensuring a comfortable win for the visitors. New Zealand’s bowlers failed to trouble the English batting lineup, leaving the hosts searching for answers ahead of the Wellington Test.

New Zealand Playing XI: Tom Latham (C), Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell (WK), Glenn Phillips, Nathan Smith, Tim Southee, Matt Henry, Will O’Rourke.
