New Zealand Recall Key Names for Zimbabwe Tri-Series as T20 World Cup Preparation Begins

New Zealand have named a 15-member squad for the upcoming T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe, marking the return of several senior players as the team ramps up preparations for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The tri-series, featuring hosts Zimbabwe and South Africa, will be the first assignment under new head coach Rob Walter and is scheduled to begin on July 16 at Harare Sports Club.

Captain Mitchell Santner, all-rounder Rachin Ravindra, and power-hitter Glenn Phillips have all been recalled after missing the March T20I series against Pakistan due to Indian Premier League (IPL) commitments. The squad also includes a maiden call-up for uncapped batter Bevon Jacobs and the return of fast bowler Adam Milne.

Notably absent are several key names: Kane Williamson is unavailable, while Ben Sears (side strain), Lockie Ferguson (workload management), and Kyle Jamieson (family reasons) are also sidelined. The series will serve as a critical platform for squad assessment and combination testing ahead of the global tournament in India and Sri Lanka next year.

Head coach Rob Walter, speaking on the squad announcement, emphasized the significance of the tri-series. “We’ve got a really strong squad for this tour and I’m looking forward to getting to work with the group,” he said. “It’s nice to welcome back players who missed the March series and to introduce new faces who bring fresh energy.”

Walter also pointed to the competitive value of the series. “Facing a quality South African side and a Zimbabwe team that performs well in home conditions gives us an excellent opportunity to assess the depth of our squad and trial different combinations,” he noted.

New Zealand open their campaign against South Africa on July 16. The tri-series will not only provide match practice but also act as a benchmark for selection and team structure heading into a crucial T20 World Cup year.
