
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officially launched the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy with a spectacular opening ceremony at Dewan-e-Khas in Lahore Fort on Sunday. The event, which marked the return of the prestigious tournament after an eight-year gap, set the stage for the competition’s much-anticipated start on February 19, when host nation Pakistan will take on New Zealand.
The historic Lahore Fort was illuminated in grandeur, symbolizing the excitement surrounding the first Champions Trophy since 2017. The event also paid tribute to Pakistan’s memorable victory in the last edition, where they defeated India by 180 runs in the final at The Oval in London. Several members of the 2017 trophy-winning squad were present at the ceremony, reliving their triumphant moment and adding to the nostalgia.

Speaking at the event, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed Pakistan’s enthusiasm and readiness to host the global event. “The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will return to Pakistan for the first time in 29 years. This tournament is more than just cricket; it is an opportunity to showcase Pakistan’s hospitality and passion,” Naqvi stated, as quoted by the ICC.
The choice of Lahore Fort as the venue for the launch carried deep symbolic significance, reflecting Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage and the nation’s deep-rooted love for cricket. Addressing fans, Naqvi encouraged them to embrace the moment and turn up in large numbers. “This is your moment to fill the stadiums,” he urged, highlighting the importance of home support.
Pakistan has been drawn into a highly competitive group alongside New Zealand, India, and Bangladesh. Meanwhile, the other group features Australia, England, South Africa, and Afghanistan, which will be making its tournament debut. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, setting the stage for an intense battle for the coveted title.
