Pretoria Capitals dominate Joburg Super Kings to revive SA20 playoff hopes

  • by

Pretoria Capitals delivered a commanding performance to secure a six-wicket bonus-point victory over Joburg Super Kings in the Jukskei Derby at Centurion on Tuesday. The crucial win propelled them to 14 points, just one point behind the fourth-placed Super Kings, keeping their SA20 playoff hopes alive.

With their season on the line, Capitals coach Jonathan Trott made bold changes, introducing five new players into the starting XI. Captain Rilee Rossouw was unavailable due to the birth of his child, leading to Kyle Verreynne taking over the captaincy, while Will Jacks was named vice-captain. The team also handed SA20 debuts to Australian duo Ashton Turner and Tom Rogers, as well as fast bowler Gideon Peters, while Will Smeed returned to open the innings alongside Jacks.

From the start, the Capitals showcased their intent, delivering their most clinical performance of the season. Jacks set the tone with the ball, conceding only two runs in his two powerplay overs, giving the team a strong early advantage. The Super Kings struggled to build momentum, and their problems worsened when Devon Conway was forced to leave the field in the third over after being struck on the arm.

Making an immediate impact, debutant Tom Rogers dismissed Joburg captain Faf du Plessis, who was caught at short fine leg. Fellow debutant Gideon Peters followed with a dramatic first over in SA20 cricket. His rapid bouncer troubled Conway upon his return, leading to a mistimed pull shot that was caught behind by Verreynne. Demonstrating his full skillset, Peters then unleashed a searing yorker to trap Moeen Ali leg-before, picking up two wickets in his first over. He maintained his accuracy and pace throughout his spell, finishing with impressive figures of 2/15 in four overs.

Left-arm spinner Senuran Muthusamy added to Joburg’s struggles, chipping in with two wickets. The momentum then shifted to Player of the Match Migael Pretorius, who tore through the Super Kings’ lower order with figures of 3/22, ensuring they could only muster 99/9 in 20 overs.

Chasing a modest 100-run target, the Capitals never looked in trouble, despite a spirited effort from Lutho Sipamla, who claimed three wickets for the Super Kings. Marques Ackerman anchored the chase with a composed 39 off 22 balls, ensuring the Capitals secured victory with ease and stayed in contention for a playoff spot with two crucial matches against MI Cape Town remaining.

Reflecting on the win, captain Kyle Verreynne expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, acknowledging the importance of securing the bonus point. “It’s been a tough couple of days, so I’m pleased to get the bonus point. We were nice and clinical with the ball, and the guys finishing it off with the bat was pleasing. We’ve only played two games at home earlier, so it was good to come back. There was nice energy out there. In theory, we have two games left, but it can become five games. We need to enjoy our game and play with a smile on our faces, and that will hold us in good stead for the next two games,” Verreynne said.
