Rain threatens to disrupt final 2 days of IND-AUS Brisbane Test

  • by

The Bureau of Meteorology of Australia has forecast a high likelihood of rain disrupting the remaining two days of the ongoing Brisbane Test between India and Australia at The Gabba. With rain already playing a significant role on Day 3, Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to see further interruptions, with a 90% chance of rainfall predicted for both days.

According to reports, Tuesday could witness rainfall ranging from 5 to 30 mm, while Wednesday might see 2 to 25 mm. These conditions are likely to impact India’s already uphill task of overcoming Australia’s dominant position in the match.

Rain first intervened during the second session of Day 3 and returned in the final session, washing out almost the entire evening’s play. Only three overs were bowled in the third session, during which India added just three runs to their total. At stumps, the visitors were struggling at 51/4, trailing by 394 runs, with KL Rahul (33*) and skipper Rohit Sharma (0*) unbeaten at the crease.

India had resumed the third session at 48/4, with Rahul and Sharma attempting to steady the innings. However, consistent rain prevented any significant progress.

In the second session, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant showed resistance, with Rahul playing the shot of the day—a picturesque cover drive off Pat Cummins. However, Cummins struck back, dismissing Pant (9) with a perfectly pitched delivery that caught the edge, sending the ball into Alex Carey’s gloves.

Rahul tried to fight back with a boundary off Mitchell Starc, but rain halted play before any momentum could be built.

Earlier in the day, Australia resumed their innings at 445 with only one wicket remaining. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Mitchell Starc, who had smashed a slog-sweep six off Ravindra Jadeja earlier in the session. Bumrah forced an edge from Starc, which Rishabh Pant safely caught behind the stumps.

Mohammed Siraj then cleaned up Nathan Lyon’s defense to hit middle stump, while Alex Carey’s aggressive approach against Akash Deep led to a mistimed shot that ended Australia’s innings.

India’s reply got off to a disastrous start. Mitchell Starc removed Yashasvi Jaiswal (5) and Shubman Gill (1) early, both falling to catches by Mitchell Marsh. Josh Hazlewood dismissed Virat Kohli (3), tempting him into chasing a wide delivery, which he edged to Carey.

With India reeling at 51/4 and still trailing by 394 runs, the possibility of rain over the next two days adds another layer of complexity to the match. The weather could provide some respite to India by limiting Australia’s chances to press for a result, but it also hampers the visitors’ opportunity to mount a meaningful fightback.
