Rohit Sharma has added a historic milestone to his illustrious career by becoming the first captain in cricket history to lead his team to the finals of all ICC tournaments. India’s victory over Australia in the Champions Trophy semi-final on Tuesday not only secured their place in the final but also solidified Rohit’s legacy as one of the greatest captains the game has seen.
Since taking over the full-time captaincy in February 2022, Rohit has led India to unparalleled success. In just three years, India has reached the final of every ICC tournament under his leadership. India’s journey under Rohit began with the World Test Championship final in 2023, where they faced a tough defeat against Australia, losing by 209 runs. Later that year, India dominated the ODI World Cup 2023, remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament, only to falter in the final against Australia, who secured a six-wicket victory in Ahmedabad to claim their sixth title.
Despite these setbacks, Rohit did not allow the disappointments to overshadow his determination. He masterminded a dominant campaign in the T20 World Cup 2024, leading India to their first title since 2007. Under his leadership, the team remained undefeated, capping off a remarkable tournament with a victory in Barbados.
The Champions Trophy was the only remaining ICC event that Rohit had yet to conquer, and he made history in Dubai by steering India to the final. In the semi-final clash against Australia, India executed a near-perfect chase to secure their spot. Chasing a 265-run target, Virat Kohli showcased his class with a masterful 84 off 98 balls, while Shreyas Iyer contributed a crucial 45 off 62 deliveries. Their efforts helped India achieve their most successful run chase against Australia in an ICC event, surpassing the 261-run chase in the 2011 World Cup quarter-final.
