Rohit Sharma provides fitness update on Jasprit Bumrah ahead of England ODIs

  • by

India captain Rohit Sharma has provided an update on star pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness ahead of the upcoming ODI series against England, stating that the team management is awaiting the results of his medical scans. Bumrah, who sustained an injury during the final innings of the fifth Test against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, did not bowl in the last innings of the Sydney Test and was advised by Australian doctors to sit out the remainder of the match.

Following medical advice, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to rest Bumrah for at least five weeks after the Sydney Test, which concluded on January 5. He is set to undergo another scan soon to determine his recovery progress. Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of the England series, Rohit confirmed that the team is waiting for an update. “Jasprit, obviously we’re waiting on some update about his scan, which is due to happen in the next few days,” he said.

The Indian skipper also mentioned that the management would have more clarity on Bumrah’s availability for the final ODI against England once the scan results are available. “We’re just waiting on that update, which is going to happen in the next few days, the scan. Then, probably we’ll have a little more clarity about his participation in the last ODI,” Rohit added.

Bumrah had a stellar 2023, finishing as the leading wicket-taker in international cricket. He picked up 86 wickets in 21 matches at an impressive average of 13.76, including four four-wicket hauls and five five-wicket hauls, with a best performance of 6/45. In Tests, he had one of the best calendar years by any bowler, claiming 71 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 14.92, with five five-wicket hauls.

With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 around the corner, Bumrah’s fitness will be a crucial factor for India in the tournament. The eight-team event, scheduled to take place from February 19 to March 9, will feature 15 matches and will be hosted by Pakistan and the UAE under a hybrid model. India will play all its matches in Dubai, with their tournament opener against Bangladesh on February 20. The much-anticipated India-Pakistan clash is set for February 23, while India’s final league match will be against New Zealand on March 2.

Meanwhile, before turning their attention to the Champions Trophy, India will take on England in a three-match ODI series, starting in Nagpur on Thursday. The second ODI will be played in Cuttack on Sunday, and the series will conclude in Ahmedabad on February 12.
