Rohit Sharma Surpasses Sachin Tendulkar to Become Second-Fastest to 11,000 ODI Runs

  • by

India captain Rohit Sharma added another milestone to his illustrious career, surpassing cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar to become the second-fastest batter to reach 11,000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Rohit achieved this feat during India’s ICC Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh in Dubai on Thursday.

The record-breaking moment came when Rohit sent the ball racing to the boundary. He reached the landmark in just 261 innings, surpassing Tendulkar’s previous mark of 276 innings. However, the fastest to the milestone remains Virat Kohli, who accomplished it in just 222 innings. With this achievement, Rohit also became the fourth Indian cricketer to reach 11,000 ODI runs.

Known for his explosive batting, Rohit took a measured approach against Bangladesh. Instead of launching into his signature aggressive stroke play early on, he assessed the pitch conditions before accelerating his innings. He set the tone in the third over by tucking the ball away to the unguarded backward square-leg boundary, reaching his historic milestone soon after.

The Indian skipper then took on Bangladesh’s left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman, punishing him for three boundaries in a single over. He first drove the ball over cover-point before stepping forward and lofting it over mid-off for another four. On the penultimate delivery of the over, a mistimed pull shot took the outside edge but still managed to find the boundary.

Rohit continued his assault on Mustafizur before eventually falling to Taskin Ahmed, miscuing a shot that was caught by Rishad Hossain. He finished his innings with a brisk 41 off 36 balls, striking seven fours.

With this latest achievement, Rohit’s overall ODI record now stands at 11,029 runs in 269 matches (261 innings) at an average of 49.01. His illustrious career includes 32 centuries and 57 half-centuries, further cementing his legacy as one of the finest limited-overs batters in the game.
