SA20 playoffs line-up finalized as Season 3 enters decisive stage

  • by

The SA20 tournament is set for a thrilling conclusion as the playoffs begin on Tuesday, marking the start of an intense week that will determine the ultimate champion. The group stage has been highly competitive, with coastal teams dominating on their home turf. Paarl Royals and MI Cape Town have remained unbeaten at Boland Park and Newlands, respectively, establishing their grounds as fortresses throughout the season.

MI Cape Town’s success has largely been driven by the consistency of their opening pair, Rassie van der Dussen and Ryan Rickelton. Van der Dussen, despite being rested for the final league match against Pretoria Capitals, leads the tournament’s run charts with 330 runs at an average of 55 and a strike rate of 134.15. Rickelton has also delivered crucial performances, amassing 259 runs at an average of 51.80.

Paarl Royals have also benefited from their openers, with teenager Lhuan-dre Pretorius and England’s Joe Root playing key roles. Pretorius, in particular, has been a standout performer with 323 runs at an average of 32.30, placing him second in the season’s top scorers. However, Root will be unavailable for the playoffs due to international commitments, making it a challenging phase for the Royals.

The playoffs will kick off with an all-Western Cape derby as MI Cape Town takes on Paarl Royals in Qualifier 1 at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on Tuesday, February 4. Meanwhile, defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape have had a mixed group stage but remain in contention for a historic title defense, thanks to their formidable pace attack. Marco Jansen has been instrumental, leading the wicket-takers chart with 15 scalps at an average of 15.80, while Richard Gleeson has contributed 12 wickets at 19.91. Jansen is also leading the race for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award with 159.54 points, followed by Pretorius (130.85) and Joburg Super Kings’ Donovan Ferreira (122.08).

The Joburg Super Kings have secured the final playoff spot and will face Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the Eliminator at Centurion on Wednesday, February 5. The winner of this match will advance to Qualifier 2, where they will take on the loser of Qualifier 1 at Centurion on Thursday, February 6, for a place in the final. The grand finale will take place at the Wanderers on Saturday, February 8.
