The build-up to the SA20 Season 4 auction intensified after all six franchises announced their retained and pre-signed players. Each team was allowed to keep a maximum of six players — three South Africans and three overseas — during the retention window that closed on July 18. Wildcard signings, which could include any overseas or returning South African players from Season 3, were also completed ahead of the September 9 auction in Johannesburg.
A combined auction purse of USD 7.4 million will now be used by franchises to fill 84 remaining slots. Notable South African names like Aiden Markram, Lungi Ngidi, Dewald Brevis, Quinton de Kock, and Tabraiz Shamsi headline the pool of players available.

SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith highlighted the balanced nature of this year’s squads: “There’s now a strong balance between pre-signed and retained international and Proteas players, alongside a significant purse available for the auction. After three seasons, the franchises have developed a good understanding of the South African cricket ecosystem and adopted a distinct strategy which sets the stage for the most exciting auction yet,” he said.
