Bangladesh’s veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling in all tournaments organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The suspension comes after an independent assessment found his bowling action violated the 15-degree elbow extension limit defined in the regulations.
Shakib’s bowling action was reported during a County Championship match in September, where he played for Surrey against Somerset. Following this, he underwent an independent assessment earlier this month at Loughborough University. The assessment confirmed the irregularities, prompting the ECB to impose the suspension effective from December 10, the date the report was received.

“To overturn the suspension, Shakib will need to pass an independent re-assessment of his bowling action,” the ECB stated. Until then, he remains barred from bowling in ECB-organized competitions.
The 37-year-old returned to county cricket after over a decade, picking up nine wickets for Surrey in his first appearance since 2010-11. However, this latest setback adds to what has been a tumultuous year for Shakib, marked by both professional and political controversies.
Earlier this year, Shakib’s role as a Member of Parliament in Bangladesh became a source of contention. His position was overturned by the Awami League government following widespread protests in July and August. The political turmoil led to Shakib missing his farewell Test match against South Africa in Mirpur. Protests for and against him had erupted outside Dhaka, further sidelining him from the national setup.
In his absence, Bangladesh faced significant challenges. The team suffered a 2-1 ODI series loss to Afghanistan and endured a 3-0 whitewash at the hands of the West Indies. Shakib has not featured in international cricket since the India tour earlier this year, leaving questions about his future in the sport.
