Shubman Gill Shines with Century in Ahmedabad, Completes 5,000 International Runs

  • by

India’s star batter Shubman Gill continued his fine form in ODI cricket, smashing a magnificent century against England in the third ODI at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. His innings of 112 off 102 balls, which included 14 fours and three sixes, not only helped India post a formidable total but also marked a significant milestone in his career as he completed 5,000 international runs.

Gill’s latest century added to his growing reputation as one of India’s most consistent batters in ODIs. His fluent knock came at a strike rate of 109.80, as he built crucial partnerships with Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. His stellar run in the ongoing ODI series has made him the leading run-scorer, amassing 259 runs in three matches at an impressive average of 86.33, including a century and two half-centuries.

With this century, Gill now has seven ODI centuries to his name. His dominance in the format is further highlighted by the fact that he holds the record for the most runs after 50 innings in ODIs, surpassing South African legend Hashim Amla’s tally of 2,486 runs. In just 50 ODIs, Gill has accumulated 2,587 runs at a remarkable average of 60.16, with seven centuries and 15 half-centuries. His highest ODI score remains 208.

Gill’s performance in Ahmedabad also placed him in an exclusive club of cricketers who have scored a century in all three formats at a single venue. He became the first Indian to achieve this feat at the Narendra Modi Stadium, joining the ranks of Faf du Plessis (Wanderers, Johannesburg), David Warner (Adelaide Oval), Babar Azam (National Stadium, Karachi), and Quinton de Kock (SuperSport Park, Centurion).

Additionally, with his consistent batting in the three-match series, Gill became only the seventh Indian cricketer to score a fifty or more in each match of a three-match ODI series. He now shares this record with Kriss Srikkanth, Dilip Vengsarkar, Mohammed Azharuddin, MS Dhoni, Shreyas Iyer, and Ishan Kishan.

Since making his international debut, Gill has established himself as a key player across all formats. In 103 international matches, he has scored 5,058 runs at an average of 43.60, including 13 centuries and 25 half-centuries in 130 innings. His highest international score is 208.

While his ODI stats are exceptional, there is room for improvement in Tests and T20Is. In 32 Test matches, he has accumulated 1,893 runs at an average of 35.05, with five centuries and seven fifties, with his best score being 128. Meanwhile, in 21 T20Is, he has scored 578 runs at an average of 30.42 and a strike rate of 139.27, including one century and three half-centuries.

Shubman Gill Breaks ODI Records with Stunning Century in Ahmedabad

India’s young batting sensation Shubman Gill delivered one of his finest performances in ODI cricket, breaking multiple records with a commanding century against England in the third ODI at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday. His 112-run knock not only powered India to a series-clinching 3-0 victory but also etched his name in the history books.

Gill’s magnificent seventh ODI century, which came off 95 balls, saw him surpass the likes of Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, and KL Rahul as the fastest Indian to score seven ODI tons in just 50 innings. No other Indian batter has reached this milestone in fewer innings than Gill.

Moreover, his career tally now stands at 2,587 ODI runs in his first 50 innings, making him the highest run-getter at this stage of an ODI career. He overtook South African legend Hashim Amla, who previously held the record with 2,486 runs in 50 innings.

After a disappointing run in Australia, Gill found his rhythm back on home soil and ended the England series as the top scorer. His 259 runs in three matches at an average of 86.33 played a crucial role in India’s 3-0 series whitewash.

What made his Ahmedabad century even more special was the challenging seaming conditions early in the innings. Facing a tricky pitch that assisted fast bowlers, Gill remained composed and helped India recover after losing an early wicket.

“I was feeling good; this was one of my better knocks. The wicket was a bit tricky at the start, a bit for the fast bowlers, so it’s satisfying. It was seaming, so the chat was simple—rotate the strike, not lose too many wickets in the powerplay, build on the momentum, and take it from there,” Gill shared in the post-match presentation, after being named both Player of the Match and Player of the Series.

Gautam Gambhir Backs Shubman Gill After Stellar ODI Series Against England

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has come out in strong support of the young batter, urging critics to be patient and avoid judging players based on individual innings.

Addressing questions about Gill’s Test record, Gambhir emphasized that consistency in one format does not mean a player cannot excel in another.

“The problem is that we keep judging people after every inning. He’s still a young batter. He’s just 25 and has a great future ahead of him,” Gambhir said in the post-match press conference.

He pointed out that Test cricket is a challenging format, but Gill has already shown that he belongs at the highest level.

“If he’s been consistent in one format, Test cricket is tough, but he has already shown that he can play in that format as well. I hope that going forward, he can actually deliver in that format too. If someone can do it in 50-over cricket, why can’t he do it in Test cricket? He has played some really good innings in Tests,” Gambhir explained.

Gambhir further stressed that constant judgment and scrutiny do not help young players grow. Instead, he called for more trust and long-term support for emerging talents like Gill.

“By judging a young cricketer after every inning, we’re not going to carry Indian cricket forward. We need to start trusting these young players. He’s only 25. Imagine what he can achieve in the next couple of years if we continue backing him and other young cricketers in that dressing room,” he noted.
