Australian pacer Spencer Johnson has shared his thoughts on replacing Mitchell Starc in the squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Johnson, who was brought in after Starc withdrew for personal reasons, acknowledged the challenge of stepping into the veteran pacer’s role but expressed confidence in contributing effectively to the team.
Starc’s withdrawal comes at a time when Australia is already facing major setbacks, with injuries to key players such as Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Marsh. His absence further weakens the team’s frontline pace attack as they prepare for the tournament, which kicks off on February 19 in Pakistan and the UAE. Starc, who has requested privacy regarding his decision, had shown signs of discomfort during the latter stages of Australia’s second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Johnson admitted that replacing a bowler of Starc’s caliber is no easy task but remains optimistic about making an impact. “It’s obviously something I’ve pictured in my mind, to come in and play a similar role to him. There were a few nerves, and obviously, these are big shoes to fill. But I think I am better for the experience. This is only my third ODI, and hopefully, with a few more games, I’ll be able to replicate some of the things he has done,” Johnson told ESPNcricinfo.
The left-arm pacer also highlighted the difference in playing conditions between Australia and Pakistan, suggesting that the wickets in the subcontinent will likely be flatter. “Guys like Trent Boult and Starcy, left-armers who are aggressive, hopefully, that’s what I can bring to Pakistan. I think the wickets there will be different from what we got here. This one had some nip and carry early on, but Pakistan will potentially be a bit flatter,” he added.
