Kusal Mendis delivered a match-winning century to help Sri Lanka defeat Bangladesh by 99 runs in the third and final ODI at Pallekele, securing a 2-1 series victory. Mendis scored a brilliant 124 off 115 balls, guiding his side to a competitive total of 285/7 in the series decider on Tuesday.
Bangladesh, in response, struggled to build momentum and were eventually bowled out for 186 in the 40th over. The lack of substantial partnerships cost them dearly, as Sri Lanka’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout the chase. With this comprehensive win, Sri Lanka claimed the three-match series 2-1.

Mendis’ knock was not only his sixth ODI century but also a redemption of sorts. In the previous match in Colombo, he had been dismissed for 56 during a promising run chase, which Sri Lanka lost by 16 runs. Speaking after the match, Mendis expressed his satisfaction at making a decisive contribution. He said he was disappointed with not finishing the job in Colombo and was determined to see it through in the final match.
His 124 anchored the Sri Lankan innings, and his consistency across the series earned him the Player of the Series award. Mendis accumulated a total of 225 runs in the three matches, standing out as the most reliable batter for the hosts.
Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz admitted that the team fell short in the crucial middle phase of the chase. While six batters reached double figures, no one managed to convert their starts into a significant score. Mehidy, who contributed 28 runs, highlighted the importance of strong partnerships in one-day cricket and noted that Sri Lanka’s ability to build a big stand after being 100/3 made the difference.
With the ODI series concluded, both teams will now prepare for a three-match T20I series, starting on Thursday at the same venue in Pallekele.
