Star New Zealand Players Opt for IPL instead of upcoming PAK vs NZ Series

The upcoming 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has drawn top New Zealand cricketers away from their national team’s forthcoming tour to Pakistan.

The series between both teams is scheduled starting from April 14 till May 7, 2023. IPL matches, on the other hand, are set to begin on March 31 in Ahmedabad with first match between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans.

This highly anticipated cricketing event has prompted many of New Zealand’s primary squad members to choose the cash-rich league over representing their country in the Pakistan series.

Top players such as Kane Williamson, Tim Southee, Devon Conway, and Mitchell Santner have been granted permission to participate in IPL 2023.

Consequently, they have been released from the ongoing Sri Lanka tour and will join their respective IPL teams before the league matches begin.

Furthermore, Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, and Glenn Phillips will also be joining their IPL squads after wrapping up the ongoing series against Sri Lanka. Trent Boult will also miss the Pakistan tour due to his IPL commitments.

Earlier this year, a full-strength New Zealand side visited Pakistan and won a three-match ODI series 2-1. The teams also faced off in a two-match Test series that ended in draws.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is expected to announce the squad for the Pakistan tour during the current Sri Lanka series.

In the meantime, the Pakistan cricket team will play three T20Is against Afghanistan in Sharjah.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has opted to rest several regular players, including captain Babar Azam, for the series starting on Friday, March 24.
